I remember two great concerts. One was the concert at the BOTTOM LINE in New york City. Those concerts led to the friends cd. I also was at the CLUB BENE with GINGER BAKER. All music was great and was topped off with the promoter saying"JACK BRUCE AND GINGER BAKER Please!"

I started playing piano and organ at the age of 7, guitar at 10; becoming a bass player at age 12 - buying my first Gibson at age 13! I had to buy an EB0 (the SG shape) because my biggest influence was JB. At age 45 I still play bass - I now have an EB3L for fun (just because) and Jack is still No.1! I almost got to meet Jack in Brook Street at RSO when I was playing my demo tape at age 16... so Jack - if you're ever around Canterbury - give me a call!

Greetings, Jack. Over 30 years ago my friends and I had a great time covering your Cream songs. I played bass and with my Gibson EB-0 tried my very best to impersonate your playing! Exploring the roots of Cream we ordered up a copy of The Sounds of '65, which in time became THE party record for us in the early 70's. We drank quite a few bottles of Barcardi rum while listening over and over to that album! I loved that version of Traintime.

That was many years ago. Hero's aren't what they used to be. But on occasion I still get together with Ed Young, our drummer from back then, and we run through the great old songs. He's become a bit of a guitar player over the years and he always asks that I play bass to his takes on Crossroads and Spoonful. It's still a lot of fun for us.

I hope the coming years are good to you. You might not have been the best influance for a young man back then but all the same you were a bass playing GOD for one Steve English.

Best wishes, Jack.

Have not been to the site for a while - guess I'm still disappointed that Jack didn't make it to the Ultimate Rock Symphony in Sydney; don't blame Jack but Jimmy Barnes was hardly a fitting replacement. I had an experience last Friday which brought me back to the site. I went to a music shop in Sydney and was served by an 18-22 year old shop assistant. I'd bought a midi interface, a mike, some software and was looking for a case for my SG (it had been twenty years naked and I felt it was time). The shop staff were pleasant but as a grey headed forty-eight year old man I wondered whether they thought I was a homeless person looking for shelter. A song started to play and a conversation took place between the shop staff, one of whom mentioned "Theme for an Imaginary Western" and referred to it as a "great song". I interjected "The greatest rock song ever written" (I did not think they would have ever heard "Victoria Sage"). That led to a 15 minute conversation between myself and the 18-22 year old shop assistant. He initially thought Felix Pappalardi had written "Theme..." but I disabused him and we then discussed his JB bootlegs, my "Cities of the Heart" and "Live at the Bottom Line" Cds and Jack's work generally. Who said there was such a thing as a generation gap. Best wishes to Jack with the new release. PS I'm doing "Sunshine...." and "White Room" in my gigs at the Mortdale Hotel in Sydney on the first Friday of each month - if I owe you and Pete some royalties let me know. I'd be glad to give you a cheque when you come over to OZ. PPS. G'day Lorro - sorry it's been so long since we've corresponded.

Hi Jack! Do you really read this? I guess my message is typical of many. Thanks ever so much for the music, not forgetting Pete Brown's lyrics. Especially in the '70's, albums like Harmony Row, Songs for a Tailor and Out of the Storm were great sources of comfort/inspiration. I'm a Geordie, and I saw you at Newcastle City Hall, first with West, Bruce and Laing, and later when you had Mick Taylor and Carla Bley in your band. It's a shame no studio output came from that lineup. I spent the 80's and half the 90's living in a Hare Krishna Temple, but I've still got the old albums. You can't give everything up! Anyway, once again, thanks for doing what you have done and best wishes for the future.

As all Jackettes would know, May 14 is Jack's Birthday. So what better way could we celebrate this monumental occasion than for all Jackettes of the world to point a glass towards Glasgow (JB's birthplace) and toast the Great One at 8pm (Glasgow time) on May 14? If you're not sure about the time zones, just search World Time Zone and be a part of this annual event. Hopefully JACK will be toasting back to us. Cheers - Marc.

Jack

kinda cool to write to Jack "NSU" Bruce. Jack and Andy now hmmmmm. The styles mix very well in my head and I haven't even heard you guys yet Oops/I will. On to my question. I was obsessed with Cream> The work was so ahead of its time and has stood the test of time so damn well. But I'M HUNGRY Jack. I know there was a lot of friction in the band and maybe it was just a place in time but if possible how bout 1 more studio album before we all leave this earth-Screw the touring_If not many thanx for the hundreds of hours of sit up /pay attention musicianship over the years You even had me playin for 15 years or so but I decided probably best if I kept my day job. so....whadya think maybe??? "we can work it out " righht??? Give my best to Ginger his finish on sleepy time time LC1 so clean so strong so hot!

Best Regards

Jack, i hope you read this.......do you remember back to 80/81/82 and you were on your way down to record with Keith Emerson and you got a flat tyre somewhere in London and pulled into a Tyre and Exhaust place to get it fixed. And the Manager in there was amazed and honoured to meet you. You spoke to him for a while. You had a Jaguar........XK8? at the time and had your bass and amp in the boot. Well since i became a fan of yours 6 months back my Dad told me about this. You see the manager was my Dad. The first time i ever heard Cream was 6 months back. And Dad put on a record called Wheels of Fire. And simply said "lets listen to some REAL music" and then on came Crossroads (at a very loud volume) and i was blown away. Since then i've got every Cream record i can get my hands on. I am a huge fan and i'd be honured if you could e-mail me back. I play bass and i'm often unable to work out your bass lines. I'd really like some tips on playing like yourself. I've read the books, listened to the albums, played the songs, watched the videos....and DVDs and done everything i can except speak to the great man himself. A living legend. Jack your the best, none of these young flash-cats nowadays can match your power and authority and allround brilliance of bass playing. But not just your bass playing, but your songwriting and harmonica playing too. Traintime on Wheels of Fire is amazing. However your singin is the talent that amazes me most along with your bass playing.

Thanks.

Jack:

Happy Birthday, and many, many more.

You know, with Hot Pants seemingly on hold, it would be a good time to pull G & E together on the basis that this is a "new" group, not beholden to the past. Do whatever you'd like - old, new, borrowed, stolen - people will come.

It need not be perfect - not like getting married (right!)

Your birthday - a time to think/do something about it.

So go where your mind will keep, even if you can't swim back again.

With deepest respect (and apologies for the presumptiveness),

PLee CANYON

05 22 01, 3:18am ("Four until late!")

Mr. Jack Bruce,

You have GOT to help me! 20 years ago my roommate used to play a solo album of yours over and over again (as your voice was (is) so hypnotic...Anyway, this vocal you did was a song about going to a party, and the fadeout was you singing, sadly, lonely, *WAILING* "I'm going to a party....".....I have told my kid brother about this song (Paul is a MONSTER fan of Cream. as am I) but he doesn't know the name of it either (the album this song is on).....This is one of the most haunting, GREATEST vocals you have ever laid down, and it has been in my head for 20 years.....JB!! JB fans!! Please email the name of this friggin' song and the album it's on, ASAP!! (to: jwil0079@mindspring.com) Jack Bruce, ME and Wally caught you at The Strand club, Redondo Beach, Cali, 8 years ago (two weeks apart from the late great Rory's show at the very same club!!!) YOU KNOW WHICH RORY, lads, there was only ONE!! and Wally and I were drunk and yelling SOOOOO loudly for "White Room" that you pointed over to us at a front table, saying, "I'm gonna play White Room, as these lads over there are yelling for it so loudly"...or something like that.....Thanks for taking requests SOO personally Mr. Bruce We had a marvelous time, your voice HAD NOT changed, its POWER none diminished......The power and passion of your voice is UNPARALELLED in all rock....You could have sung opera (Had you trained for it??).....BTW, I write tonight because last night I saw your old mate, EC, at the Philips Arena, and he was BRILLIANT!!!....C'mon. Ginger is pushing 62......DO IT FOR THE WORLD Somebody has got to talk Eric into it...LET CREAM RIDE AGAIN ONE MORE TIME, ON AN INTERGALACTIC WORLD TOUR!!!!!!!!!

And thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for "Deserted Cities of the Heart".....Your V O C A L on that is how Byron wrote poetry; how Mozart composed notes; how Chagall daubed pastels, in a word, sublime....Remember al you Brucies: I need the NAME OF THE SONG WHERE JACK PLAINTIVELY SINGS ABOUT GOING TO A PARTY.......Post-Cream solo album.....All the best.......P.S. Eric's "Sunshine..." was good last night, Jack's in '93 was KILLER............Mir vsem, JBW

I am embarrased to say that I lost complete contact with Jack Bruce and somehow got the idea (I can't remember where) that he died 10 years ago! I was following up on that after listoning to my Disraeli Gears album for the first time in 5 years and found your website. Needless to say I am happy to find out he is still alive and making music. It is hard to believe that one of the best bass players and singers in rock history is not more well-recognized! Looking forward to checking out the new album.

I learned to play bass back in 1966 by listening to and copying Jack's improvisational style. Went on to college as a professional musician playing jazz-fusion and put the bass down in 1980. I recently bought a new bass in order to get back into it...relaxation only and the first thing I did was to purchase CD's of Cream:Goodbye, Live vol 1 & 2, and Songs for a Tailor. My old plastic versions were worn out. I still think he's the best rock bassist that ever played.

hi jack,

i just wanted to tell you that i know clapton has a career today because of you, because without your writing & invention(& ginger's playing), he would have just been another blues guitarist. as a guitarist myself, clapton was an idol for me, and certainly a great player for the time(he's never played with the same fire & gusto since, & i wish he'd get over it, he's sucked since!), after the beatles mate, you're my biggest influence as a writer(as you said, running through our hands, do i know or what! i was listening.), followed by stevie wonder. you might know of me. i was in a band called "world at a glance" on island records 10 years ago with dougie bowne. in fact, we recorded the most amazing cover ever of i feel free for our album, down at compass point in the bahamas. chris lord-alge still has the rough mixes of it. it was killin'. unfortunately, there was a producer down there at the time who heard it & flipped out, & then proceeded to tell the guy who was producing belinda carlisles album about it, who then went & had her do the worst cover ever of it(and released it before us!), and it did absolutely no justice to the tune at all. a missed opportunity to introduce one of the great rock songs to a new generation. ah well! anyway, when dougie left the band, he left with a chip on his shoulder(we were very close. i'm sure you know how that one goes, mate!). i had taken him at his word when he said our friendship would be the better for it(he was like a brother to me), and found out later he was pissed because i didn't try to convince him to stay. you can't win! as a result, when you were auditioning guitar players at the china club about 10-11 years ago, he purposely didn't tell me about it or obviously mention it to you, and i wound up hearing about it afterwards from my ex-wife who happened to be there that night, along with every other guitar player in town, including mack bowne, dougie's brother! and do you know why? because he knew you'd want me to play for you! if you only knew the nights dougie & i sat up, when i was putting him up at my house, and talked about me & him playing in a band with you. and it's because we're both writers, my guitar-playing has always been an extension of my writing style, & vice versa. you would have loved writing with me as much as dougie did, and my guitar playing would have bit back at you! i almost cried when i went to see you at the ritz, i think it was with ginger, for that tour , and heard you guys playing with that blues sarahoochie, whatever, guy! his sound had no feel or dynamic, and he just ran the same ideas over & over again, as fast as he could play them. what a waste! anyway, i've held all that in for years! you have my email address. i know you're excited about doing this thing with andy summers, as well you should be. you deserve to be happy. and he's great, a major influence to many. and as far as the cream thing, i've always felt you got screwed. you wre cream, and i know it. ah, by the way, i almost forgot 2 things! 1: john scher used to be my manager, as well, along with rob kos(rob may have been after you're time) 2: in 1977, my friend, percy jones, had me come over to his and joyce's house, to make dinner for a mr.simon phillips, and afterwards, we went to see you at the bottom line! oddly enough, among the many things i've done, i've played with funny bands that were a huge influence to me at the time, i.e., gong(with daevid allen, bill laswell, chris cutler, fred frith, blah, blah, woof, woof!) and national health(with alan gowen, pip pyle, john greaves, phil miller & peter blegvad). so i've been far outside the box, just like you, mate. and i've just returned from living in sydney for the past 8 years, & yes, was disappointed that you didn't come! but anyway, jack, keep my email address, write me if you'd like my tel.# here in n.y., & keep it for a rainy day. you might need it, you never know. you know how this "biz" goes, don't you?

g'day, ml

Hello, It must have been 1969 or 1970 when I was first introduced to the music of Cream. My brother played the LP's over and over. He was an inspiring guitar player who wanted to be like Eric. At the age of 8, I was more focused on the power of groove. I was enchanted by the live performances and how each member would bring out the musical best in each other. It was than that I became interested in bass. I am now 38 years old and have been playing since then. I do believe that I owe it to you Jack why I still play bass after all these years. Thank you for your music, past -present and future. Take Care, Scottie

I´m so glad.... that I finally found the Jack Bruce Homepage!

I wonder if Jack still owns

- the Ferrari 365 GTB (on the cover of "Things we like") - the Gibson EB-3L (with slotted headstock, correct?)

and I wonder if he tours Germany soon? I´d love to see him live on stage again and I would appreciate if he wouldn´t play the fretless bass in his impeccable manner like noone else (maybe Carla Bley´s bassist Steve Swallow is a bassist of the same size!)only, I would love to listen to his piano work as well since I´m still enormously impressed by "Monkjack". I better do not write about my appreciation of Jack´s voice, else I couldn´t finish this comment today.....

All the best to the whole Bruce family from a fan in Germany! Regards Karl H.

In August last year (2000)I formed a CREAM tribute band called 'a spoonful of CREAM'. We have played live on a number of occasions and am pleased to tell you that there is still a great interest in Cream's music. Not only from those who would have seen the band first hand, but also from young students who are well into Cream's music. What I am asking for is a direct EMail address for Jack so I may have a chat to him. We first met when I was in a support band to Cream in early '67 on the Ricky Tick circuit. I also had the pleasure of supporting Jimmy Hendrix Experience at around the same time. So, as you can see, there is a little bit in common. Thank you for your time. Cheers. Peace. Mick Rutherford.

I was there at the JB gig at Camden Jazz Cafe last night. Brilliant!! The sight of a band with 4 percussionists had me wondering if I was going to enjoy it, but by the second number I was convinced that this was a very exciting band indeed! Apart from blues and jazz based numbers driven by these wonderful Latin/African rhythms, there were some splendid romantic sounding things, a bit like his Moncjack album but with the addition of the band. Until the album comes out I don't know what the various numbers were called, apart from one which was my favourite of the night called Dark Heart I think. Quite honestly I thought the inclusion of White Room was, although predictable, a bit of a disappointment - I wanted to hear more of the new stuff and am glad to hear there is another couple of album's worth in the pipeline. All in all, an excellent gig and I felt quite privileged to be there amongst a lot of music press, recording types and a few celebs like Dick H.Smith and Clem Clempson (I think - though my eyes are failing these days), definately Robert Wyatt and I managed to shake the hand and thank the one and only Pete Brown for his splendid lyrics over the years.

Looking at Jack's web site "Guestbook", about 95% of the "chat" is about Cream - people should get out and buy this album, and if they're lucky, see the band. Jack's music is about NOW not the late '60s. I've always felt that his "fans" do not give the acclaim due for all his work since, which quite frankly, is better (not to belittle Cream's importance at the time).

Dear Jack,

As a Baby, Baby Boomer, I grew up hearing your voice. As an adult, My boyfriend showed me who it was doing the wonderful singing. He is a bass player and we have YOU to thank for that. HE is WONDERFUL. I know it was You who helped him decide to branch out in this area. Myself, I was given a copy of Ringo's Allstar Concert and got to see you do the songs that I grew up with. For this I can Thank My Honey, David Bolin. I do believe he is your biggest fan. And I have been for a very long time. I just had to be shown THE LIGHT. Keep it going Sweety, You ARE SO CUTE..... And I know if I brought you home out of the cold and wet, You would have a GREAT PLACE TO LIVE for the rest of time. Only Dave and I would fight as to who got to play with you all of the time. You are so good, keep doing it, PLEASE. We Love You In Texas MISSPRISS-IN HOUSTON

Hi all, at first 'cuse my poor english, I'm sorry about that. At last I'm trying to find somebody who may can help me. It's more than 25 years ago I listend to my elder sister's LP's when she was out. And there was ONE LP I could have died for. But during the following years I forgot it's name, but last yearI heard a song at the radio (I can tell you, it was the first and the last time I ever heard a Jace Bruce Song in German Radio), and now I know, what I'am looking for: its Bruce's famous "Harmony Row". So since one year I'm trying to get/buy this LP. I was looking at newspapers, I was at privat markets (in ´Germany so called "Flohmarkt") and the stuff like this. I was also looking for commercial offers, even I had a look for it in the Netherlands, in France and in Switzerland - but I had no chance! Wasn't able to get right now. So, maybe somebody of you who's reading this, can give a hint where to download Bruce's "Harmony Row" in at the internet, or maybe, somebody who's got it is able to burn it on a CD that I could buy? So, many thanks for Your understanding and for Your help. Dirk

Hello! Just wanted to say that I found your web site real interesting. I'm not really a Cream fan but in random web surfing I found your site and I have to say that I really like a couple of Cream's songs and they have been running in my head lately(White Room and Sunshine of your love). I love the guitars in both songs and your voice(singing) Jack is cool. I can tell you though that I love jazz and your music sounds real good. I could listen to that all day probably. I also like the Big Band era and some of your music reminds me of it. How is the new band Hotflash going? I was intereted in the fact that you did some work with Manford Mann(sp?). That's a cool group, too. In closing I wanted to tell you that in two pictures of you you look kind of like my favorite singer Bono of U2(which is also my favorite music band....no offense). This was truely an interesting visit to your site and I hope that the rest of your career goes well. Jazz on!

Just want to say thank you Jack for inspiring me to play bass - which I've done now for over 30 years - Just wondered do you still have your EB3 do you still play it? I bought one in the early days cos you had one. Probably one of the all time best and easiest basses to play. I play a Fender Jazz Bass now - bit of a monster - but hey it does the business. Well keep up the good work you still inspire me !!
