My first experince of JB was with the Graham Bond Org in 1965. I have a copy of "Sound of 65" album which Jack, Ginger, Graham & Dick signed for me in the Concorde Club, Southampton, England. Everybody realised Graham in particular had a heroin habit, but I was shocked to read in "The Mighty Shadow" by Harry Shapiro that he was probably also a paedophile. Has Jack commented on this aspect of Graham's personality?

Having played bass for almost 30 years, I've been a fan of Jack for a long time. Unfortunately, I was bitterly disapppointed when Jack cancelled his appearance in the Australian 'Ultimate Rock Experience'. My partner and I had waited a long time for this and although the concert was ok, we walked out when it was clear that Jack wasn't to perform. As we were unemployed at the time, I went to court to try and obtain a refund for the expensive concert ticket price, but failed. It was a shame we were not told of Jack's decision until after the concert. Despite this, Jack is nothing short of a phenemona.......one day I hope to see him perform! He is an inspiration to hear.

Stunning gig at Cambridge Cornex last Sunday - been listening to Jack's stuff since the 60s but our first time at a JB gig. Well worth the wait. Keep on rockin' Jack - we'll be back to see you and that supreme band of yours again. All the best for the rest of the tour. Al & Sharon (P.S. The new album is excellent)

Line up: Jack, Vernon Reid, Bernie Worrell, Robbie Ameen, Horacio Hernandez and Richie Flores
What an enjoyable night. Monumental really. It was even better than The Jazz Cafe in June. The new songs sounded more lived in and the musicians were more confident. Jack looked really happy and his singing has never sounded better, ever. Not in my experience anyway.
Opening number was Surge 3 drummers playing on stage first then joined by Reid and Worrell. Jack came on last and burst into his bass playing and vocals. Very loud (it was all night). This song is sounding a lot better live than on CD.
Next up was Out Into The Field. Utterly fantastic. Bernie Worrell and Vernon Reid appeared far more at ease than they were earlier in the year. Jacks singing was so good.
52nd Street was next and was great too.
Followed next by This Angers a Liar. Jack was really into this powerful blues and sang it to bits. Magical.
Heart Quake had Jack at piano and suddenly you realised that this was a special night for Jacks voice. I realised I had never heard him so much in control, so powerful, so creative and so intense. It was spell binding.
Mucho cheers for a powerful Sunshine. Great interplay between Bernie and Vernon. Sometimes you wernt too sure who was playing what. Great stuff.
And then, wait for it.... Theme for an Imaginary Western.... as we all know one of his best songs. Absolutely breathtaking. I was close to tears. Jack sang it so perfectly. Things were going from great to even greater.
Bernie and Jack then on their own for Milonga. Another emotional tour de force.
Back with the bass and it was Dancing On Air. After the previous few songs this one was just average.
Windowless Rooms is not one of my favourites on the album, but this version was absolutely amazing. It was played with utter conviction and was so intense. Boy can our man sing and play the blues.
Mr Flesh, I can still live without.
Back to piano and a staggeringly powerful version of Dark Heart. Jacks singing here was mesmerising. He was all over the place, in the best of senses. Was this even better than Theme? Vernon Reid thought so as he lead the applause as we tried to draw breath.
And then another incredible rendition of White Room although here I thought the Jazz Cafe version was slightly superior. We are talking in realms of utter excellence however. It was sheer, bloody brilliant.
Musicians leave stage. As if we would let them away with that.
Back they came and began with a bit of spikey, quiet improv, big chords. Should I recognize this? Then he stepped up to the microphone............. "Please open your eyes.........." Bleedin Nora............. Were Going Wrong. My mate George and I looked at each other and just shook our heads. Its right up there in both our minds as one of Creams (Jack's) best songs. And here it was being sung and layed with such intensity, feeling and power. The percussion was great, Bernie and Vernon were great. But Jack was someplace else. This was the highpoint. It was absolutely mind blowing. Check out the relevance of Jack's ( Not Pete Brown) simple lyrics. Possibly the best song performance I have ever seen. We were in the right place at the right time. This is as good as it gets. I am telling you.
How do you follow that. Play a blinding version of Politician thats what. It was just so good. It went on for a while and we didnt want it to stop. What a performance.
They drifted out with a weirdy version of the end bits of 52nd Street. Jack just walked off. I think he was knackered. Im not surprised. It was a night of unrestrained playing and singing. An emotional roller-coaster. His stuff is so intense.
Thanks Jack, it was the best.

Nottingham gig very exciting; a bit too innovative for those who came expecting a Cream revival concert but don`t they know that creative talents like Miles Davis, Bob Dylan and John Lennon don`t stay in one place but move (or moved)on. So does Jack Bruce. Jack`s last visit to the City fourteen years ago in the company of Dick Heckstall-Smith and Norman Beaker`s band was the best gig we have seen in over thirty years of club and concert going. Play on!

Being old enough to have seen Cream in Ipswich many years ago, I was looking forward to seeing Jack at Cambridge a couple of weeks ago. I regret to say that the evening was terrible - NOT because Jack was off-form, but because the soundman was incompitant. In the 70s I made my living as a sound engineer, so I have some degree of judgement, but my friend is a bass player and felt exactly the same. The problem was a huge low frequency resonance that made everything into a blur. My thoughts at the time were that the vocal mics were all open, but I'm probably wrong. Sometimes the resonance almost developed into feedback. I'm sorry to be critical like this but Jack should know what calibre his crew are. The Corn Exchange is a difficult venue to set up for, but a graphic equaliser would have notched out the problem easily enough. These days there is no excuse for a bad sound. You should have heard Bill Wyman some months before to see how it's done. regards, Mike Bull

I went to see yer man at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester last night, the 7th October. Unlike a previous contributor, I didn't think it was better than the Jazzcafe gig in July, but it was enjoyable none the less.
A visitor to JB's Guestbook complains about the sound at Cambridge - I too wasn't happy until I sussed out what was wrong. I was quite pleased to have secured a front row, middle seat but I couldn't hear a thing that Bernie or Vernon were playing. I was getting the blast straight from Jack's Hartke rig, plus what was coming out of his monitors and the full percussion ensemble. After a very frustrating Out into the Fields when Vernon's fingers were all over the place and I didn't hear a note (!*!), I vacated my seat and went to the end of a row further back - absolutely fine for the rest of the performance!
The repertoire, with timings (wow - in 24r clock format!) was:- 2015 The Surge, 2021 Out into the Fields, 2026 52nd Street, 2034 Heartquake, 2041 This angers a liar, 2050 Sunshine, 2100 Theme from in Imaginary Western, 2107 Milonga, 2112 Dancing on Air, 2120 Windowless Rooms, 2132 Mr. Flesh, 2136 Dark Heart, 2145 White Room - (Encore) 2155 We're going wrong, 2200 Politician - (2nd Encore) 2210 52nd Street
Criticisms - Dark Heart (possibly my favourite) missed the other bassist from the London gig and took on a different, subtely changed character, which although was interesting in itself, left me a little disappointed. We're going wrong - I had not heard since the Cream Saville theatre gig in the 60s. It was brilliant then and regretably the recorded version did not come any where near it. So I was really looking forward to it. Alas, Vernon Reid's "doodlings" just did not fit!! I've a pretty broad taste in guitarists from "straights" like Clempson, Clapton, Green, Moore to the bizarre like Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, but what Vernon was doing, mmm, seemed, how can I put it, inappropriate for the mood and musical structure of the song. What do others think? I really, really missed Directions Home which was not featured - why no Alfredo? (Glad I'd seen this in the Jazz Cafe)
Anyway, this is sounding like I'm slamming the gig!! It was very enjoyable and it was good to see a good crowd there getting their rocks off. Jack was like a man possessed, giving those fingers and vocal chords a real work out. A magical moment was in Sunshine, when towards the end, Bernie "sang" "I've been waiting so long" in such a deadpan, gruff voice that Jack nearly cracked up laughing!!
A splendid night in spite of the criticisms - hopefully the rest of the world will enjoy an equal or even better performance!! Here's to the next time. All the best Jack and the band!

Attended the Glasgow gig on Saturday. A great bunch of musicians. Enjoyed the old stuff, but also the new. Sound balance was not too great, and sometimes difficult to make out lyrics - possibly me getting older, like everyone else. Wanted to say however that "We're going wrong" was a complete standout, worth attending the gig for that alone, particularly given the warring noises of the politicians since Sept 11, and rather prophetic, given what happened the following day. I vividly remember TV footage of Cream performimg this against a background of the Vietnam War all those years ago. Thanks for the pleasure of a great evening. Hope you keep going strong.

Went to see Jack and the boys appearing in central Manchester on Sunday last. The Bridgewater Hall is a fantastic venue - small enought to be intimate - large enough to be quite grand - either way it suited the band perfectly as the music was great.
Sitting centrally in the seventh row gave us a great view and an excellent sound. My wife had never seen Jack perform before and was impressed with how animated he was. I explained he is always like that because he lives and breathes his music, and always gives his all in a live performance.
It was a very memorable gig - the first time I've seen Jack since he played at The Grand in Clapham (which was videoed but never surfaced). The whole band played well and the use of so much percussion was decisive in creating such a tremendous groove.
Being a bass player myself, I love to hear the bass mixed up loud - never disappointed in this area. It was nice also to hear so much piano playing by Jack and great to hear "Theme..." once again - which he poignantly dedicated to the late (and much-missed) Felix Pappalardi.
"Sunshine..." and "Politician" still rock these days, and how lovely to hear "Were Going Wrong" again. My only disappointment was the omission of "Directions Home" from the set, but you can't have everything.
What would be great would be a live "Shadows" CD culled from this tour. I wish the band well with the rest of the tour - they clearly enjoyed it every bit as much as the audience.

I just feel more confident myself when I know that you are out there, making good tunes. But,why is it so impossible to make something more of the ending of "Sunshine of your love"? I mean, not specifically "Sunshine of your love", but that "drone" thing, going on one note, one helluva BIG note and going and going.I´m not a musician,so maybe this is an old question, but I miss some kind of really agressive dronemusic, there are of course good examples ,good music, good bands etc. but they all have in common the relaxed ,meditative state of mind, wich is 100% okay and lovely, but the Yardbirds tried ,a 1000 years ago,to make it more aggressive and shaking, and you did it for a few seconds with the ending of "sunshine". I dont know if its possible, but I have always longed for a really drawn out onechorder with infinite acceleration in depth. Go on now and do like I told you! (joke) Best regards Anders

I doubt if Jack ever reads this page but I must say that who ever it was that he employed as PA engineers at his recent Fruitmarket gig in Glasgow should have a specialist look at their hearing!! Jack himself performed brilliantly against the combined cacophony of the rhythm section with Vernon Reid on chainsaw! Occasionally, in quieter passages, it was possible to hear Jack's bass (he didn't really need the LED's in the Warwick neck). Because Jack is a loud singer his voice was reasonably audible, but this was to no avail when he stepped over to the keyboard. It was so loud as to drown most of his vocals - and this was on the quieter numbers. Poor Bernie Worrell might as well have settled down to the TV in his hotel room, for all you could hear him. Now, I know that the acoustics in this venue are, well, challenging - but this was a problem of sound balance. I can only presume that the PA engineer had the night off and gave the gig to has partially deaf apprentice. I write this in the hope that someone in Jack's management reads this and can take some action to prevent other fans being disappointed . Good grief, we get little enough chance to see AND hear Jack live, without these rare gigs being marred by avoidable technical oversights. Thanks anyway to Jack and the band for a great show. I can only presume that their onstage monitor engineer did a better job for them than Front-of-House did for the audience! Al Fleming

When will the Japanese dates, as well as US and Australian, be released?
Now I'm afraid if the sorry state of the world these days might put off oversea dates, considering that Jack once said in an interview that the tour would be finished before Christmas, covering the above areas.
This is particularlly a pity because none other than Eric Clapton is to tour Japan between 19/11-15/12. Jack's tour is likely to coincide with Eric's and there is every reason to anticipate that something special might happen on stage considering Eric's dedication to the Shadows in the Air album.
I saw Jack twice--in Osaka in 1992 (the power trio with Bruce Saraseno and Simon Phillips) and in Edinburgh in 1995 (the Monkjack "pianno recital" with Bernie Worrell on Organ) . Through these two entirely different approaches to live performances, I was impressed by Jack's musical diversity.
I hope that Jack will bring to Japan the recent Latin-American approach, another of his many musical phases.
And I also hope to hear again "Theme for an Imaginary Western", cirtainly one of the biggest hidden jems in the history of rock music.
Last but not least:mixed feelings to hear that Jack has to sing "We're Going Wrong" and "Politician", both being great to hear but too serious, heavy and downer choices for encore. Songs for a "Jihad" indeed.

For stress relief, or to simply get movivated for a date, I jam my bass to Crossroads and other favorites. I will love you always and always look up to you as my master.

jack is a great bassist and explorer, a real influence. here in the 70's in the us his playing persuaded me to put down my les paul long enough to pick up an ebo and send it roaring through my marshall. if he reads this i hope it helps him to realize he is legendary in new england and should try to do some shows here at some point. thank you.

Hello, Mr. Bruce,
Forgive my feeble attempt at humor. I was delighted to see you grace the cover of this past months Bass Player. Oddly, this held great significance for me. As did your latest release "Shadows in the Air." I would very much like to share a tale with you, Sir. Admittedly, I've been a fan since "Songs for a Tailor." At forty six years of age, one usually does not pen fan mail. Clearly. at this point, I now feel inspired. Thank You, Sir. If you are unable respond, I completely understand. I have a story, no more bizzarre than the life of any other. Simply a story about fate, music, passion....and you, Sir. As my tale isn't short of words, I must beg your indulgence. In closing, I'm hoping to hear from you, Mr. Bruce. There is a degree of tribute to my diatribe which I want to share, but cannot share with the average soul. I can assure you, I harbor no lurid or dark intentions. This is, oddly enough, your story as well as mine....given the understanding my reality has been deeply touched by your presense in my lifetime. I'm just now realizing, I could type away and feel tempted to begin. Having said enough already, may I make one final comment? I admire your ability, sir, to keep your voice as an artist untouched by compromise. In an age where art becomes the mimic and the mimic becomes art, there is much to be said about yor creative presense as a musician and composer. At least from my point of view. Thank you, Sir, for music that continues to bring inspiration and clarity to those of us who feel more inclined to take a moment to listen. Looking forward to hearing from you....okay, I hope to hear from you. Thanking you in advance!!!!....TommyB.

I saw your performance in the Frankfurter Hof in Mainz and i'm absolutely fascinated by the power- full music you and your band played. It was an extraordinary experience to see this fantastic show. Every musician was great. Your wonderful bass and piano playing was unbelievable and just great, the "guitar man" was super and the hamond organ player "did one of the greatest jobs i ever saw". Finally the drums and percussion group was just amazing and it was the best " inspiration base" for your playing i could imagine.
Thank you for this wonderful evening!!!!!! Your Christian

Hi there Derek, and Jack! Great to see the new web site!
As lifelong fan of Jacks Music, it's great to see it getting some of the recognition it deserves, but sadly due to my busy schedule I was not aware of the UK tours, until just now!
I strongly suggest that Jack sets up some kind of mailing list, either by email (on this site, using egroups or something) or a physical postcard scheme, as we never know when he's playing until after the event!
He played Ronnie Scotts in the early 90's which was fab (do you remember it Jack, all your gear was playing up?!) - again, we only heard of it through the RS brochure. I'm amazed as many people as there are, attend his gigs. If they were marketed right, the turnout would be far better! - And we'd get to see him more 'cos he'd have sold out so many times, he'd have to book more nights!
Derek, please see about setting up a mailing list for the gigs, as I for one am missing them all - and it's becoming a real pain!
All the best
Dave Jacobs

I caught the Jack/Cuicoland gigs at North Sea Jazz & Milky Way in Amsterdam. North Sea was o.k., Amsterdam was f.... great. I listened to the tapes and it keeps on getting better. I thought the performances with Kip Hanrahan in the last century could not be outdone, but this was truly very good. Also the pleasure the musicians seemed to have on stage was really impressing. Keep on going !!

A splendid performance on Jools Holland show on Friday....BUT....having established who he was (for those who didn't know!!) by opening the show with Sunshine riff, why were we treated to the whole thing later, denying the opportunity to show where Jack is now!! Surely if someone from the Cream era looked in, they would say "an old 60s guy still doing the same old stuff"!! I feel this was a missed opportunity to show where Jack is today - even if he had done "Out into the Fields" from the past, the new exciting treatment would surely have stunned old Cream fans into buying the new album. Was time a limiting factor? Two bands got three numbers!!
Yours slightly miffed but glad to see him on the box,
JohnB

It was great to see Jack on "Later...With Jools Holland". About time too, that Jools invited him on. The show has been going for over a decade!!! Like most people I have spoken to, however, I was most disappointed that Jack was not the main feature of the show.
Instead we were subjected to an interview showcasing the tedious, pretentious sub-urban ramblings of old Jarvis Cocker. I mean, OK, I accept that Pulp are a very popular band (with a certain audience) but really - three dreary numbers from them, and Jarvis' uninspired monologue as well?
The show started well enough with everyone jamming on the "Sunshine" riff (although it was clear that some of the younger musicians present clearly had not learnt this progression in their musical growth) and one might confidently have expected Jack to have been central to the evening's events. Instead he was fourth of the featured bands and he only got to do two numbers, when nearly everybody else got three!!!
Jools, you do have some explaining to do here. I can't believe it was Jack's idea to have such a low-key presentation. JH did just about mention the new album "S.I.T.A.", but if you had coughed, you would have missed it. The BBC/Later Website actually invited e-mail questions to ask of Jack - surely giving the impression that - as one of the U.K.'s musical elder statesmen - his appearance was being given the serious recognition that it deserved. In the event there was no actual interview with Jack. Interviews with Pamela Stevenson and Alexi Sayle (both of whom I admire - but not really essential on a music show) but none with Jack??
Do us all a favour Jools. Later is an brilliant show; it is comparable with the great and sadly missed "O.G.W.T." (although atleast Bob Harris interviewed Jack). Please invite Jack and the band back on for a special one-off solo performance - like the recent excellent Paul Weller or REM spots. He deserves better treatment than the minimal attention given to him last week.
The two numbers "52nd Street" and "Sunshine Of Your Love" were, however, great and well received; as you could tell by the reaction of the audience - some youngsters actually dancing to Sunshine"?!?!
Incidentally Eels were great - I bought the new album ("SoulJacker") as a result of this performance.
C'mon Jools you must be feeling a bit guilty about this. Do the decent thing....We are all waiting.

I'm responding to the question put forth by Cuicoland Express web site- Jack's Tracks. The person who thought of the title "Disraeli Gears" was Cream roadie Mick Turner. This was actually a faux pax on Turner's part. When Eric Clapton had mentioned he was considering buying a racing bycicle, Mick Turner blurted out, " Oh yeah, Disraeli Gears". What he meant to say was 'deraileur gears', confusing the wording with the name of former British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli. Also, I noticed the subject of the song We're Going Wrong, which is apparently being played live with the Cuicoland Express. I noticed there was some thought on the matter of what inspired Jack to write this song. From my knowledge, Jack was very much inspired by Porgy and Bess and the soundtrack to the movie. From this he was influenced to write We're Going Wrong. Talk Atcha Later F.M.

Hi Jack, love "Shadows in the Air", esp. the new versions of "White Room" and "Sunshine of Your Love." [Also, I was wondering if "Things We Like" is available on CD yet.] I have a suggestion concerning your tune "Milonga." After listening to it several times, I was reminded of an idea in Ecclesiastes 3: 11: God has formed in every person a God-shaped "hole", which only He can fill; He put in us a longing for things eternal, if you will. A relationship with Him enriches all our other relationships. So, if you want a relationship with God I suggest you read the Gospel of John. If you already are a Christian and want to strengthen your relationship with God I suggest you read the First Epistle of John...Anyway, much praise and love from a long time fan in the USA, John Paul Estremo

Dear Jack,
I am a big fan even though I'm 20 years old, but I respect and appreciate your work so very much. I just recently bought Songs For A Tailor LP off the internet a couple of months ago and hope to collect all the records/CDs of yours one by one. Your writing and collaboration of music are very inspiring to me, and for that, I'd love to give all my thanks to you. Someday soon, I will compose an essay, and send it to The Cuicoland Express Newsletter, on your music coming from a 20 year old fan's point of view to show that you can still reach out past the generation boundaries. I just started playing guitar, but I am going to buy a bass in the very near future and learn how to play! Seeing you play on my Cream DVD's & Videos, really puts a drive on me in wanting to purchase one and learn how to play. You, sir, are the best bass player, ever! I really hope you can make it out to Houston, Texas. I will be turning 21 on December 24th, so if you play at a club, I will be able to go! God Bless you and may you have a very safe tour.
THANKS AGAIN FOR THE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!!!!
Love, Priscilla

Just a quick note, I used to live in NY and now I really wish I did. Unfortunately I wont be able to fly there to see Jack play on the 12th. I REALLY hope you book more than 4 shows in the US. People here in the states really need to see you, especially in these times. I'm now in Dallas, and if you play anywhere in TX, or any of the surrounding states for that matter, it would be a dream come true to see you. Please add some more dates in the US for this tour. We are all looking forward to seeing you.

Jack, You've been an overwhelming influence to me for over 30 years, from the early days of Cream through your solo career.I've had the pleasure to have seen you perform at My Father's Place in Roslyn,NY and at the Sundance in Bayshore,NY in the late eighties. Both of these shows are something I'll always remember. The memory of seeing you on stage in a small venue made the show seem "downhome" and personal making it a very enjoyable experience."Those were the days". I always liked your bass playing on "Desserted Cities of the Heart" on Live vol.II,and your influence is still seen in my own bassplaying style today. I'll see you at BB Kings place December 12th in NYC.You are among the top players in the world.Keep on do'in it! Steve G.

Excellent website, Jack! I'm plotting to buzz up to Chicago to check you guys out, however---how 'bout buzzing down to Kansas City for a gig? Your live band looks outstanding I can't wait to hear it. Just wanted to say a quick hello, also thanks for inspiring me to pick up the bass, one of the first songs I learned was a Cream song "Hey now baby...get into my big black car" See you in Chicago, my friend...
P.S. Does anyone know if there will be additional U.S. dates in the near future?

Jack, I can't begin to say what an influence and inspiration you are to my own bass playing style. I had the opportunity to see a couple of times in some of the smaller venues you played at, and every time I wanted to sell my bass gear watching you perform tunes from CREAM and your solo material.I recall a show at the Sundance saloon in Bay Shore, NY in October of 1988 which to this day still remains as vivid in my memory as it did that evening. It was the first chance I got to see you perform up close and you blew me away with your playing style on fretless. I went out and bought a fretless bass myself and covered some blues standards with my band,as well as some Cream tunes. You are without a doubt the single most driving force behind my bass playing from the early days to this day forward.See you in December at BB Kings in NYC. Peace and Happiness. Steve

Hi Jack, You have know idea how you were important for me and also my brothers and friends. With all the information difficulties during the 60's and 70'in my country we knew Cream, Jack Bruce, Mountain and a lot of talents. You made me listen music in a different way: by separating each instrument, voices and after 30 years I am still a big fan.
I wish you can come to play in the beautiful, warm and sunny city of Salvador, estate of Bahia located in the northeastern of Brasil. We are waiting for the opportunity to listen you very close to us.

Hi: I am a pro music journalist and am contacting you to try and set up an interview with Jack when he is in L.A. for his Dec. 17 House of Blues show. I spoke with him briefly many years ago on the phone. I've written extensively for Guitar Player, Guitar World, and other musician-directed magazines. The interview would be for a Japanese mag called Player, a much respected journal that has been published for many years.
Please call anytime at (323) 654-1145.
I've met virtually every major music who's ever played and Jack Bruce remains at the top of the list of 'most respected.'
I look forward to hearing from you.
All the best ...

Wow! Great web-site! I thought I was the last true die-hard JB fan. Nice to see so many more have been so deeply affected by Jack's music as I have. "Shadows in the Air" is brilliant! I'm a drummer, so I can really relate to Jack's new band--wish they could come to Cleveland (Ohio, that is). I love everything Jack has ever done (he's the best!) but this new CD is very special to me. This one might be better than "Question of Time" , another favorite. To fellow Brucians: Dave Oswald, loved your detailed concert review but, "Mr. Flesh" is happening (my favorite cut) and Roberto in Brescia, is the only person I know of who shares my passion for "Timeslip" (a masterpeice) I have a tape of some rare JB recordings that I can't find info on sources. Can anyone tell me what projects produced the songs "Rootin'Tootin'", "I'm Getting Tired", "Hear me Calling Your Name", and "Camels and Elephants" (early 60's?) Also, there's an old song called "Stone Crazy" that I believe was a single by Retaliation with Aynsley Dunbar on drums and is that Rod Stewart on vocals? Does anyone know anything about personnel and dates for these rare gems? LONG LIVE JACK THE BRUCE!

So much to say...Jack and his music have been an inspiration to me since the early 70's... I often thought about what I'd say if I ever met him... That his music was like the sound track for my life... That his voice is one of the greatest, most versatile, passionate (and under-appreciated) that I have ever heard ... and his musicianship overwhelms me... He is so musically blessed and has been an inspiration to me! I have tried to spread the word ... I pray that Jack will receive back as much joy as he has given... Haven't seen him in concert since the late 80's... Please give the Detroit area a thought for a future show...there are many out here who love and appreciate you!!!

I and many others must be wondering what Jack is depressed about at the moment and probably conclude that the problem is the lack of gigs on the American tour. Presumably this is because promoters are unwilling to take the risk of booking Jacks band as they are most likely to be out of touch with who Jack is and what his music is all about.
Although we, as devoted fans, find this difficult to imagine especially after the high standards set by his latest album, you have to, perhaps, look at the whole thing from a different angle to see the what might be the causes of the problem. None of us are getting any younger and the music scene has changed dramatically since the days we hold perhaps as the best in the history of rock the sixties. I, amongst many, have little time for much of the fashionable music of today which has its roots in .well, nothing but the desire to get as much money out of the pockets of punters for as little production cost as possible. But presumably promoters are only targetting the young and hip to sell their product; therefore you can perhaps understand why they are not interested in a 58 year old even though he was famous in the 60s with Cream. In fact I have been deceived on a number of occassions into reading ads which are headed Cream which now seems to refer to some dance craze thing!!
I suppose it is a risk thing; however, I ask the question how come other bands with their origins in the 60s can still do tours of Europe, Oz and other countries? I see Jethro Tull still manage to tour the world every year. Jack however, has always seemed elusive and it has been very difficult to catch a live performance (though the web site has improved this enormously). It could be a case of out of sight out of mind hence the majority of people on the web site talk only of Cream days and Cream re-unions. We know how much more Jack has contributed to music since those days.
Perhaps I am suggesting that he or his management need to look at how gigs should be promoted in future. Perhaps it needs an honest look at the real fan base I did ask this question in a previous letter to try and get an idea on world sales of his latest succesful album. It might be that instead of waiting for people to come to him, someone needs to get out there and do the donkey work. Perhaps smaller venues should be considered or is money or pride the overriding consideration? Other artists of the same era can be seen more regularly perhaps Jack needs to tell us what he really wants to do? For instance, could our friends in America or in Oz get together to assemble a realistic list of venues with Jack providing the parameters within which to operate and Jack/the band take the financial risk?
These are just my own thoughts perhaps Jack and his management would care to enlighten us as to what are the problems. We all might be able to help in the end it must be recognized that there are people all round the world who think he is still the greatest rock musician ever, and just want to see the guy play live.

A couple of thoughts:
1. Jack is not a "rock" musician;
2. Unlike Cream, which was based purely in music, 60's groups that continue to tour like Tull featured characters like Anderson out front that facilitated what the public at large wants and remembers fondly - escapist fantasy;
3. Notwithstanding the constant implorings of jerks like me, Jack has not reassembled (or was not able to reassemble) Cream with Ginger and Eric - that would have brought worlwide attention and had the promoters bending over and saying "ahhh" for the chance to book them anywhere at any time.
4. Look around - the sheer weight of MTV propogated crap makes it near to impossible for young audiences to find, much less know about, music for its own sake. The constant emphasis on image, status, sex and violence has stolen that moment of youthful inspiration.
5. Cream was not Eric's idea of a good time - then or now.

Just got tickets to see Jack and Co. in NYC on 12/12/01- I can't wait. It's been 10 years since I last saw you Jack. We chatted briefly after a gig in Feburary '90 in Philly before a few of the faithful stopped you from getting on the tour bus in the freezing snowy night. That was one of the most memorable nights of my life- you signed an ATM slip for me which I still have. Now I'll be seeing you with my son who, has become a self-taught bassist himself- I believe in great part due to your influence as I played your music around him since he was born. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be close enough to NYC to see you this time out as it seems you're only able to make a few stops in the states. Congratulations on "Shadows"- it's excellent and was well worth the wait. Looking forward to hearing the songs live and with a violin in the mix! Any chance of you whipping out the ole cello? One of my dreams is to see you play "As You Said" live. It's so great to see you looking and playing so well-from the posts from the European gigs, you continue to get better with time- like fine wine. See you in New York!

I don't know what to say except that I am concerned that Jack feels life is being difficult right now. The only Rock dream I have ever had is to play with Jack and Ginger Baker. A lifetime ago I was invited to play guitar for Chick Corea when Al DiMeola left "Return To Forever". I still want to do two years like CREAM did c. '67-'69 It might kill me but it is what I live for. I hope the American leg of the tour isn't too taxing. I really do love, you, too, Derek. All Apologies.

your comments on the passing of george were touching.
for me, music is a process of discovery and following pathways ... the music of the beatles led me to you, your music has led me to kip's and carla's and tony's and miles' and so much more ... perhaps no greater tribute to any artist can be paid than the satisfaction in knowing that he took music somewhere new, that he inspired further exploration of all that is wonderful ... george's music did that for me ... yours continues to. looking forward to seeing you in nyc.
best always to margrit and the family.

Hello all JB lovers. I was hoping for a more robust tour schedule in the US. I live in the Twin Cities and am considering going to Chicago for a show but it bothers me that someone as great as Jack can't draw more interest. I assume that it is mostly due to the fact that he doesn't pander to executives that want him to produce hollow pop songs to attract larger audiences. That is probably why most of us have so much respect for him. His music stands up to anyones, but it need some introspection to really appreciate. I've been a fan for 30+ years and it has always bothered me that Clapton gets a lot of press, but he has put out some real crap. I'd say 80% of his stuff since Layla has been sub par, but his focus is on popularity so much of it sells. Anyway, I have no real point except that Jack has helped me though my Fathers death (1986 - I was into 'Into the Storm' and it helped) and it frustrates me that more people who know better aren't at least promoting his great talent. I have to give Ringo credit in knowing there is no better bassist to play many of the things Jack was asked to play during the three tours (I saw all of them. How many would I have seen if Jack wasn't there - 0). Hope you feel better about things Jack - Take care. Jim Fisher

Hey Jack, were waiting with baited breath for your Aussie tour!
While sad to miss you on the British Rock Symphony tour I relish seeing you in a full concert of your own stuff. Either CE or Cream Police modes would suit just fine! Hell you couldn't bring Bernie and Dennis in the same band could you (play used to play together in Parliament after all. Miss Brisbane however and I'll have a voodoo doll made!
Cheers!

Well, tomorrow's the big day. My husband and I with 3 friends will be at the show at BB King's! Peter and I even went in on Saturday to ask if we could see the room so we could pick out where we would like to sit. They were about to say no, when I said, "You don't understand, we got married on Jack Bruce's birthday, this is very important to us!" Well, needless to say, they let us in!
All the best to you Jack, we'll be easy to spot as we'll be the one's with the biggest grins on our faces!

It was about 29 years to the day that I first saw Jack perform live with West, Bruce & Laing at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on a bitter cold but magical December night. I had been a fan of Jack's music then for about 5 years and seeing him live with two former members of another of my favorite bands in a "power trio" format was, at that age, a dream come true. Tonight, another dream comes true: I will see Jack perform live again, but this time will be very special as I will see him with my son who turns 15 on Christmas Day, the age I was 29 years ago. I feel for all those who will not see Jack on this tour because of the limited number of gigs- I guess we can thank the corporate music business for that. Jack's music was, and still is ahead of it's time. Although commercial success eludes him in most parts of the world, his musical legacy is a great one, people will still be listening to his music a hundred years from now and beyond. He is truly a musical genius whose music touches the mind, the heart, and the soul. He has influenced countless musicians through the years- all you have to do is look at the musicians who have been his "sidemen" to know his greatness. My son has become one of the new generation of Jack's "army", teaching himself to play the bass guitar in less than a month. It is very satisfying to me to see Jack's music passing on to the next generations. Thanks for all the great music and memories Jack. God bless and Happy Holidays! R. Clayton Bordentown, NJ USA

LAST SAW JACK AROUND 3 YEARS AGO WITH RINGO. HIS "THEME FROM AN IMAGINARY WESTERN" DUET WITH GARY BROOKER WAS SPELLBINDING, ALL THE MORE MEMORABLE BECAUSE I BROUGHT MY SON JAKE, 12 AT THE TIME, WHO REALLY DUG THE SHOW. I'LL BE RETURNING TO THE SAME VENUE THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14TH, TO SEE JACK, AND WILL BE BRINGING JAKE AGAIN. HOPEFULLY, I'LL GET TO SHAKE JACK'S HAND, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, SO WILL JAKE. I got to bring my bass playing nephew to see you perform for the first time. What a thrill! Like the rest of us, he can't decide which is greater: your bass or voice. I simply say: The man is Great! Jack, it was a thrill for me to take my daughter to see you at BB Kings in NY last night. We got on line at 4:00 p.m. and got seats right at the foot of the stage. We couldn't believe you took the time to get her a pair of earplugs during a song when you noticed her discomfort with the volume. She is a big Jack Bruce fan and also plays the bass. I've seen you a number of times in concert over the years going back to your Cream days. Your singing and bass playing were incredible, the songs sound as fresh as ever - you've been an inspiration and we look forward to future albums and tours.

I went to Jack's show last night at BB Kings in New York. He was nothing short of awesome. I have not seen Jack since Goodbye Cream at the Garden. He has not lost a step. Actually he has gained quite a few steps. I always knew it was Jacks influence that made Cream what it was. But seeing Jack last night was enlightening. Forget that he was influencial he made Cream what it was. I felt like I was a fifteen year old kid again watching Jack. Not only is Jack the ultimate Bass player and singer and writer he is having fun and it shows.
Your the man Jack. Keep it up and please please please come back to New York soon and do another show.

My wife and I saw the Park West show here in Chicago, mid-December. Honestly, I could not have been more impressed with the performance. I'm only sorry the audience had such a bent for the warhorses. (Although I must say the treatment of White Room was inspired.) "Theme" were breathtaking. We devoured the new material. We've followed Vernon since Ronald-Shannon-Jackson-days and always enjoyed his playing. Tonight he was magnificent. The band was simply superlative. Great energy! Jack's voice is lovely, powerful, astounding. Had I ever taken voice lessons Jack is the example I would have followed. Thanks so much for a tonights show. Thanks so much for an undaunted and brilliant contribution to modern music.

Notes from the Park West in Chicago 12/14/01:
Two words: Virtuoso Performance. If you folks in California are on the fence about whether or not to go, I'm telling you now: GO!! What you will get is Jack Bruce with his best band yet, and in a format that allows him to display all of his talents. Of course, you will get "SuperBass", but you also get a voice that gets stronger every time I hear him, and most importantly, you get Jack on piano on a number of songs, which I feel has always been the root of his amazing solo career.
This great band allows him the above mentioned freedom. It has already progressed beyond the wonderful Shadows album into a life of its own. I understand the call from fans at earlier stops calling for a live album from this tour. The 3 piece rhythm section give Jack a freedom you won't believe until you hear him. Bernie Worrell and Vernon Reid work magic in coloring Jack's songs stepping to the front when asked. A special note to Vernon: I hope you felt the admiration from the crowd last night. Living Colour never got the respect it deserved. Please let this be a start to make that up to you. Also a word about the many fine people I met sitting in the front row at the Park West. Jack, you should know that people came from out of state, rushed around to make sure they got there early to get as close to the fire as possible, and some even came having already seen you overseas or in New York. Nice group of folks, and thanks for help making an amazing evening even better! One final personal note: This 'ol bass player from Chicago will go to his grave with the memory of you standing on the edge of the stage 2 feet away listening to you take over the end of "Sunshine". And believe me folks, he took it over!! My wife referred to your right hand playing at that point as "hummingbird wings", and I don't think I can describe it any better!! So thank you so much, Jack and the Express, for a breath taking night of music, and thanks also for including Chicago on your tour. To me, you are THE hidden treasure of what music is and should be.

Waiting anxiously for the Galaxy Theatre and House of Blues shows in California. I have tickets for both shows, which makes me feel a little guilty -- but not much -- because there are so many of you who got to see Jack only once (NYC and Chicago) and a whole lot more who won't see him at all -- sorry). My bud Eddie in NYC saw the show at BB Kings. He said it was as ggod (honestly that was a typo - but musically its true) good as it gets. He would have gone back the next night if there was a second show (we did go back the second night in 1980 and again in ... 1989, I think - memories fade, aging is a bitch). I can't believe Jack (or more likeely some booking agent)scheduled only one show in NYC but booked two in southern California. (I ain't complaining) Eddie attends a lot of shows at BB Kings and said there were more people at Jack's show than at any other he can remember (but maybe that's a function of his age and memory.) Anyway, if anyone has the time, memory and inspiration to make a quick entry in the guestbook telling us Californians what the set list was for the NYC or Chicago shows, it would make the anticipation a little better -- assuming that's possible. Thanks, dt (a final note to Santuary Records. I guarantee everyone who bought a copy of Shadows in the Air would buy a cd of a live show from this tour. Guaranteed. Just do it, please.)

Duane, The whole night was just a rush. Like I said in my message, him ripping Sunshine apart standing in front of me thrilled this old bass player to no end. But in review, I remember "Theme For An Imaginary Western" sounding great with the percussion. 52nd St, and This Anger's A Liar give the band great riffs to jam with. Dark Heart really features his voice I thought, and Surge and Milonga sounded better than on the CD I thought. Best I can suggest is to be real familiar with the Shadows CD, and see for yourself how this band takes everything way beyond that fine album. Oops!! CD!! Showing my age. Enjoy!!

Saw the Cuicoland Express in Chicago a couple of days ago. Really good performance. Vernon Reid may play too many notes at times but he does make real music out of all of that. Jack was really loose that day. For their second encore they played the best version of "Politician" I've ever heard. The band sounded really together without being too tight. Great show!

Went to see Jack and the band at BB King's with a group of other Jack fans. Fantastic performance. We all know he is such a great singer, songwriter and musician. What a performer and band leader! Started out with a great Out into the Fields. All of Shadows was fantastic. Polyrythems of 3 drummers/percussionists were unbelievable. Best of all for me was the initial encore of Were Going Wrong into Politician. First time that I've seen a performance of Were Going Wrong. Even at the half dozen Cream shows that I was fortunately to be in audience for.

We took the train down from Boston to see Jack's awsome band at BB King's. The power and the joy of the music made it a very memorable experience.
Standing outside with the crowd waiting to get into the show, we had the pleasure of talking to a great Jack Bruce fan, Melissa from Hell's Kitchen, while she was waiting for her three friends. We also got great seats Melissa! Right at Vernon Reid's feet!
At the end of the show, I took a copy of the set list, which follows:
Surge, Out into the Fields, 52nd Street, Heartquake, This Anger, Sunshine, Theme 4 an Imaginary Western, Milonga, Windowless Rooms, Dark Heart, White Room, then for a three song encore: We're going wrong, Politician, and a reprise of 52nd Street done Rumba style.
Seen Jack about 20 times, so far, and he never fails to inspire with his wonderful singing and playing.
Tour the US again and come to Boston! How about a video of the concert?
Thanks Jack

The Galaxy Theatre gig was outstanding. I had seen Jack in '89 and '93, but this time out was the best yet. Jack was in excellent voice, the band was great and as the night wore on, it seemed that the players were really starting to have fun on stage. The set list was drawn mainly from the very excellent new album. Of course some old numbers were there too-the extended renditions of "We're Going Wrong"(what a treat this one was) and "Politician" were absolutely pulverizing. Jack's bass playing remains second to none-if you have not been out to see him live, you are missing out on greatness. Jack, thanks for playing California, and please come back soon.

I learned of Jack Bruce's tour when I discovered this website. I was at B. B. King's on December 12, along with my husband, my 22-year old son, and a few other people. We, and everyone else from what we could see, had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I still love Jack's voice and my son was very impressed by his guitar skills (and his voice). I had been a fan of Cream back in my high school days, but had not really known of Jack's solo work until recently (I'm sorry to have missed out all those years). I bought the album Willpower (A Twenty-Year Retrospective) and I love it. BTW, the photos are great!

Jack Bruce is awesome. Why are so many of his solo works (Harmony Row, Out of the Storm) out of print? What a crime.

Dear Jack and Margrit, hope you have a wonderful Christmas and an even bigger 2002. To all the Jackettes who receive The Cuicoland Express electronic newsletter, I'd like to apologize for the delay in Carriage #43, but we have been having a shocker of a time with our computer/net connection, and would particularly like to say sorry to all the people who have sent in the wonderful reviews of Jack's concerts in America. Lorraine and I have been doing our very best to kick start the ******** and hope to have the next issue out in a day or two. Merry Christmas Derek, and thanks for the use of your site to inform all The Express passengers of the delay. Merry Christmas - a frustrated & weary Marc.

Greetings Jack.THANKS for all the great music and insperation. Being a bassist/composer/vocalist and performer you are THE mentor. I remember you played at the El Mocambo in 1988 and you said "Thank God somebody bought my bloody records" after I was cheering you on. I realized you were better in person than I heard on record. Also, being a Mingus freak, your right hand blew me away, which I incorperated to my bass and cello(tuned in fourths-B,E,A and D). I wonder if theres any bootlegs of you performing with Lifetime?(I WISH!!!!)A few months ago I played at my friend Jeff Healy's club in Toronto with a trio called Desraili Gears which was great. Jeff said he jammed with you and told you about me(he also fired me from his group 18 years ago because I had too much energy and was too busy).Anyways, things are going good and I also front a power-trio called "The Intentions" with a debut C.D.and involved with various free jazz groups in the Toronto area. I would like to jam with you in the future...maybe a Mingus onslaught with 3 basses!!!Have you seen the making of Escalator Over The Hill video? Where the engineer's telling you about some timing problem and Carla comes in the vocalbooth and says"Do what you want before I told you what to do",and then you nail it! I've worn out my vinyl of the 3 record set and got the 2 C.D.s.I hope you continue to put out great music because we need it to inspire our souls . In a world of music its not easy to take chances and be different so I Thank you for the greatest gift of all. IAN

Dear Jack, You have been an influence in my life from the first time I heard White Room on my transistor radio, making my homework... Although I was too young to have been able to attend any Cream show, I am convinced that I'm So Glad (from the Goodbye Album) is the best piece of music ever performed (in all categories). Having seen many of your shows (the latest of which being your performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague and the Melkweg in Amsterdam) I feel very privileged (even guilty, after hearing that so many of my American Friends do & did not get the opportunity) that over and over again my existence has been refuelled by you, not only through your incredible musicianship but also through your dedicated and friendly personality and intelligence. Of course I hope that there will ever be a reunion of that sixties band, that could only be described as the HOLY TRINITY, but one thing is clear: You, 'being the abassador of good music' as you were once aptly named (in Melody Maker, wasn't it?)have given us more than we ever could have hoped for. I (and my dear brother) wish you and your family all the best! THANK YOU JACK! Henk Buss

Great to see this site! I was listening to the live version of Crossroads coz I was given the "Air Guitar" CD for Christmas. It took me back to my teens, when that song - and that particular version - was THE song for me. I even attempted a version of it at the 6t Form concert... It must have been dire. Looking through the concert history on the site I now know that it was August 1977 when I came to see the JB Band at Lancaster University. The support band's van had broken down, so JB ended up playing two sets. Probably one of the best gigs I ever went to.
All the best Jack, hope you're well.
Cheers, Bill

I am a fan of Jack Bruce ever since the Cream, being a bass player myself, he was my major influence, he taught me how to play bass and sing at the same time.I had a band and we did play Badge, Sunshine of your love and White room.He was a tremendous bass player and singer. I share with him the affliction of George Harrison `s death...

Just received Shadows from a certain jolly man with white whiskers(no not Ginger), and it played and played all Christmas day! My kids loved it 15 and 18 especially the remake of White Room. We were all astounded. Could be a hit all over again! I think its great Eric has visited you in the studio over the years. Hopefully it may happen more often. But your bandmates are top notch and I really love the new CD. So well produced! Voice hasn't been that well recorded since the Storm album how many years ago?! Infact I'd love to hear that album, er CD, sometime soon. It's gotta be that freakin Stigwood company. Truly loved all the remakes, He the Richmond was outstanding and Fields Ah! just wonderful and your new stuff, my kids were just knocked out. "So Professional Dad! This is really good stuff! Who is this?" Ha! Keep rockin forever Jack! We luv ya!

Pollution woman ( from WHY DONTCHA, by West, Bruce Laing) is JB's best in my book. The title offended the two women I played the track to, though, for reasons which may not be too difficult to fathom, They were mistaken, as the song is about nature, sex, change, the seasons; all that....

I was quite surprised to read Alan's entry regarding 'Pollution Woman'. Although Jack's solo albums are all masterpieces, I love the songs by West, Bruce & Laing which featured Jack, and my all-time favorite song is 'Pollution Woman'. I remember reading in Circus magazine back in '72 about the recording sessions for that first WB&L album. The article noted that Jack's voice was overdubbed some 32 times for the 'choir' effect on 'Pollution Woman' and 'Out Into the Fields'. But there is something very special about 'Pollution Woman' that strikes very deep in my soul. Aside from Jack's beautiful singing, amazingingly complex bass lines, Leslie's and Corky's playing are the perfect compliment to Jack's playing and singing- in my book ranking right up there with some of Cream's best material. Like much of Cream's material and Jack's subsequent solo work, WB&L were ahead of their time. The recording of the song was a truly inspired musical event. As a teenager, I used to imagine myself hearing that song on my way to the 'afterlife' as it gradually, beautifully reaches the crescendo at the end. I never quite understood the title, but so what? For anyone to consider it an attack on women just because of the association of the two words in the title is just silly. Grow up girls- stop being so paranoid. (By the way, the Cream magazine article also pointed out that the title 'Like a Plate', another work of Jack's genius, referred to a British slang phrase for a particular sex act- can you guess which one? Any Brits out there care to give some input/clarification?) Robert Clayton Bordentown, NJ USA
