Got to see Cream perform in 1968. As a bassist, I have always wanted to be one third of a Cream/Hendrix cover band. Finally took the opertunity and quit the five piece group, started up a power trio, singing and playing bass as close to what Jack Bruce and Noel Redding did back in my school days. Thanks for the wonderful tunes.

Beware Jack fans Ive just bought a Jack Bruce & Friends 2 CD live album on Superior Records SU 29501. It turns out when I get it home that it is the same album as Doing this on ice! another relatively recent release! Regretably, being an old git my memory is not what it was and it did not click when I saw this brand new release in the shop. Ive been conned!! It even contains the same sleeve notes by one John Kirkman who evidently presents a radio programme Rockahead, and who has a website: www.rockahead.com
Does Jack know this guy is commiting this deception in his name, I wonder? I am well f****ing pissed off!!

Jack, It appears highly unlikely that you will ever get over to OZ, a very disapointing reality for your many fans in this part of the world. You seem these days to have many fingers in many pies, various tribute bands and the like are consuming your time and energy. You are a great musician and from all accounts a good bloke as well. I am one of the few people within my group of mates who hopes that a CREAM reunion NEVER eventuates...let sleeping dogs lie. I wish you all the best with these short musical adventures, but you're musical genius in my opinion lies with NEW bands and recording NEW material, not reliving past glories. The CREAM were a great band, but time moves on. Shadows is a super album, and I look forward to the next JB album with great anticipation. I am a 50 year old JB freak who has a wonderful collection of all things CREAM/JB/GINGER BAKER etc, but as I wrote previously, It's the new stuff that get's old farts like me excited. It would be great if you and the Cuicoland Express came over to the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival next Easter. I will be emailing the promoters regularly to get on your case! All the best, Phil.

Hey Jimbo, You know What? I really feel sorry for you, because you just don't get it.It does'nt really matter if Jack reads these comments or not. What matters is that people have a chance to say what they feel:what they have probably felt for some time in a public form. Yes,I think that, from time to time,Jack gets a chance to look at these comments, and when he does,I bet it makes him smile.Unlike the gloomy things that we here from you. Hi Jack,
October 18 is almost here and what a night it will be! Your music has been a part of my life and my husband Peter's life for a very long time, in fact, we got married on your birthday in 1988 because you and your music have made such a difference in our lives.
We would come to the show on the 19th as well, but we have a gig up the street from you. As a matter of fact, if you're staying in town, we'd love you to come up after the show and be our guest! The great Gene Perla is on bass. The club is Chez Suzette, 675 Ninth Ave between 46/47th Sts.
Cheers, Melissa Hamilton

To any naysayers out there -- without going into too much detail because I do not want to start a trend, but I know that Jack either reads the guestbook from time to time or is made aware of certain entries. A while back someone posted an enquiry to the guestbook about an appearance Jack was making in NYC and those people were contacted directly by Jack.

Sometimes you're in the mood to listen to something from your young days, but something which is of its time and has transcended it. I still feel the discomfort of having paid 39/6d for a half hour of music when I put on Songs for a Tailor, and again it irks me that I can't sing along to it, that the songs never leave you satisfied and happy. And that's why I'm still compelled to play it. The Liverpool beat poetry is taken to new heights, there's danger and beauty and epic and thumbnail, grand sweeps of emotion that never even out into contentment. It's unsettling and uncompromising in vocal and instrumental range and tone, and the bass still makes the hair stand up on the back of the neck. Anyway, I just wanted to show my appreciation to you for having created something timeless...........it was money well spent in the long-run. All the best and thanks.

I really like jazz now, although I was a rocker at one time, I suppose i still am a bit. I bought "Those were the days" 4 CD set the other day and after playing it a couple of times and reflecting on what a great original band Cream were, thought it would be great if you, Eric and Ginger could get back just for one tour and hopefully an album too. Wishful thinking on my part I guess....

Howdy! I'm taking in Jack's show in NY tomorrow night (Sat. 10/19). He's probably starting tonight's show right now! I'm going because:
1) when I was about 14 or 15 my cousin's hero was Ginger Baker. We were watching a show (or reading) about Cream and Jack Bruce described how, growing up in Glasgow, he used to take bicycle rides out into the country to Loch Lomond. My family being from Scotland, I thought that was so cool. Soon I was riding my Schwinn banana seat bike 30 miles to tour backcountry Long Island! At 17 I rode 1,800 miles around Scotland, partly inspired by Mr. Bruce! I even had my photo taken for the Aberdeen paper.
2) In 1992 my wife and I went birding along the Texas coast, and every time we saw a roseate spoonbill (an intensely beautiful bird) we started singing to the tune of Cream's "Spoonfull": "Spoonbill, spoonbill, spoonbill" Silly, I know.
3) I'm heading back East to see my dad, who's had a serious stroke, so need to have some fun.
4) I'm affiliated with the University of North Texas, who have one of the few university jazz programs, and I need to give a music report.
But since he's playing a blues club, maybe Jack can play "Spoonfull" in honor of Willie Dixon. But I'm sure whatever the band plays will be great.
Slainthe (Cheers) - Bill

Harmony Row begs to be re-released, I have always been under the impression that it is somehow held up do to past contractual/Stigwood problems. Don't know for sure. It is my most favorite JB album(except for Shadows in the Air) and it totaly changed my life in a most magical way. All you lucky people in NYC who were able to see him !Did you enjoy yourselves ? Did you give him hugs ? Did you have your minds blown ? Jack, (and he does read this, ya know)I was so HAPPY to be in attendance at the PArkWest Gig in Chicago last year, I was thrilled beyond compare to hear Out In The Field live, like I almost couldn't beleive it was happening....that song one of my most favorites, has always touched me,taken me out of myself into the light, and there you were singing it! Whew! Thanks for letting the gift pour through you, thanks for not giving up ! Love and Light & May Peace Prevail On Earth, Gail

Saw both nights at BB's NYC:
Cream of ?/Friday - Jack, you are playing with some pretty suck-ass sidemen. If you're going to do your Cream stuff, at least get a drummer who understands the rhythms/role Ginger played so that he can build on it. Not just pound away stupidly. Also, Godfrey's a sweetheart, but not up to that task (see Saturday, though). Tell him to ditch that Line6 transistor radio; it sounded dreadful.
Quico's/Saturday - The main event. Better than in December. Great and noble drumming. Godfrey redeemed himself. Bernie finally had a chance to play. No ensemble dynamics, other than at the piano - there's nowhere to go db-wise.
As always, you (Jack) were great.
Looking forward to when you get the right guys.

I was at The Cuicoland Express show at BB King's on Oct. 19,2002. Jack was fantastic on bass and piano. The set list was great. Bernie Worrell cooked on the organ. The percussionists added a whole new dimension to the Cream songs. What can you say about Jack's playing except that it gets better and better everytime I see him. The encore began with "We're Going Wrong" and was followed by "Politician." Jack, hope to see you again in New York.

Much extended bass/guitar interraction, very loud, very entertaining. Jack's voice is as strong as ever, and he gave 100%. The place was packed out, and everyone appeared to enjoy it. Thanks to company on our table, Don and John ... on same musical wavelength ... e-mail me if you read this guys.

About Harmony Row... I would prefer to wait for Jack to re-release a fully remastered version of his music to CD, on his own inde-label, ideally. When that happens, I will gladly purchase copies for myself, and my friends. Boot-legging of music (and the scalping of tickets) robs artists of the monetary compensation that they deserve for the music that they dedicate their lives towards creating. For a better understanding of the inner workings of the music industry, read Donald Passman's "All You Need To Know About the Music Industry". You may be surprised to discover how hard Jack and other's must work for what little compensation they receive...

Haven't checked out the site for a while. Some interesting comments going on about "Harmony Row", and let me join the chorus of stating what a fantastic album this remains even after 31 years.
Albums these days just don't have that wonderful live studio sound any more. You could hear a pin drop in the production sound on that album - listen at the very end of "The Consul At Sunset" when you can clearly hear Jack pour out a glass of water (?) and quench his thirst ... or maybe it was a glass of "Falstaff" beer - the 'thirst-slaker'!!
Anyway, I did leave a message a while back reporting what I had read in a recent issue of the UK "Record Collector" magazine - that Jack's back catalogue was to be dusted down and given the full remastered and reissued treatment soon. Hopefully this was true and not just a rumour - and hopefully it will also include "Harmony Row". That would be a nice Christmas present from me to myself!!
My old LP is still playable, if a little crackly and besides the outstanding and timeless musical content of that disc, I have also always loved the gatefold sleeve with its evocative picture of Harmony Row itself - complete with broken windows, crumbling stone and rusty drainpipes. Somehow I always felt that the imagery of the outer sleeve matched Pete Brown's lyrics - particularly those of "Post War" and "Smiles And Grins". Sleeves just aren't the same anymore either...
I look forward immensely to seeing Jack and the guys at the Manchester Apollo in a couple of weeks - and if we can't have Eric and Ginger up there as well, we should be happy with Uli and Clive. I also look forward to Jack's next release on Sanctuary, because as the line goes -
"...the best is still to come..."

Forgot to mention this in my last post: about an hour after the gig on 10/18/02, Bernie Worrell came out of the club and was very pleasant and laid-back (no big ego-tripping)- he chatted with me as he has in the past and was gracious enough to pose with me while my son snapped a photo- and he even put his arm around me- WOO! Thanks Bernie for being as cool as the other side of the pillow- as always. (I first met you in Philly in 1990). Thanks for remembering and appreciating who's on the other side of the equation. I've been checking out your website and look forward to hearing (purchasing) your work. Jack's very fortunate to have you to collaborate with(I wonder if he appreciates you?). I got to see your show at BB Kings, it was a great mix of jazz, funky organ and of course the required Cream chestnuts. It brought back memories of seeing Cream at the Marquee and Pete Brown at Klooks Kleek in the sixties. I had been looking forward to seeing Vernon Reid but the alternate guitarist was excellent and understated. I didn't catch his name, somebody said he was Chris Spedding, but I don't think so.

The biggest insult was that after declining Cream for so long, we get 2 hacks and (overpriced) snacks.
And to (dare) say it, Quico completely f*cked up the Cream stuff.

Geez, I don't know about autographs, personally I don't usually like to bother famous people like that, I just thought I'd give my impressions of the 10/19 show. Mind you, I've haven't heard anything before except Cream and Mountain. For me, it was a bit like the old Monty Python show, some of it I couldn't relate to, but other parts were absolutely brilliant. The former category were Sunshine of your Love, White Room, and a few others (argh). The latter category for me was Nantucket Sleighride (with dedication to Felix Pappilardi), the recent song (I think it's recent) with the bass hookline that was played twice (the second time towards the end, nice stuff), and Politician with Bernie Worrell going off. Out of this world! There were one or two other brilliant songs I'm missing, I'm sure, but Politician is still going through my head. It was almost worth the price of admission just to hear that rendition. Cheers, Bill

Way back there in the 60's after the Beatle's opened me up, I heard Jack's voice in front of a Cream song. I was mesmerized by the big ballsy power of his voice and I still am to this day. The way Jack played bass put an immediate shove on me to postpone my 6 string guitar and take up playing bass. It broke my heart when Cream called it quits but there was Jack, right back with "Songs for a Tailor". Jack Bruce is one of the most creative, innovative forces in music. A man I profoundly respect.
Thanks Jack for the wonderful contribution you've given the times I live in.

Both Jack's and the others' contribution to Blues Rock British explosion of the 60's will thankfully always be there ... but what's next for the younger Blues Rock generation? Example. Brilliant 16 yr old guitarist/singer Joe Hollywood(www.joehollywoodband.com) keeps to the power trio line-up. Push creativity further by writing/performing own stuff? Views?

I was at Jack's show on October 19th. It was a great show and from the way he played, you could hear Jack put his heart and soul into his performance that night. As fans that's all we can ask for. Those who feel put off because Jack didn't acknowledge them - get over it. If you weren't moved by that show on Saturday night, if you don't feel like Jack gave you something special, then you probably aren't a Jack Bruce fan. I feel priveliged to have been there that night to hear Jack play and sing - it was a little bit of heaven on earth. Thanks Jack!

Wow, you guys, quit bitching ! You were lucky enough to see Jack, he gave you what he could give, his music, why do you want to fetish his autograph when he gave you his best ? !And if you don't understand why Margrit keeps groupies away,? !! Well , how much attention do you need ? The thing about autographs is that the musician just played his SOUL,isn't that enough ? To have to have a peice of paper to remember what you experenced in the flesh is just too selfish and diminishes what you have just experenced with your own ears.Just because Jack didn't give you what you personaly wanted do not think he didn't give you what you needed, and that doesn't mean that he doesn't care about his fans, grow up ! and btw, Jack is King, and Shadows in the Air is exceptional. There's an excellent video documentary on DVD directed by Mike Gordon (bassist for Phish) entitled "Rising Low". Jack Bruce fans should check it out. It is a documentary covering the making of "The Deep End" by Gov't Mule in tribute to the late Allen Woody. There is some brief footage of Jack recording his bass part on his contribution to the project. Also, on the DVD version there are lots of extras including a short interview with Jack. This video is also an introspection into the bass guitar itself and would interest any bass player. Highly recommended!

I would like to introduce you a completely new music scale which is based on 9 helts, and it fits with human brain wave. Please check the website and listen it. You will find it amazing. I would like to expand this music to many people. I would like to introduce this conposor.
I recently was introduced to a new form of music that is being developed by a talented artist named John K. who lives in Japan. This music is a fusion of a variety of different styles. It has sort of a jazzy feeling to it as it shifts in and out of what I interpret as different minor keys. It has an Asian sound to it with unexpected note intervals and unusual tone combinations, and often has an underlying western beat. What makes this music most unique is the scale that it is based on. John has invented a new musical scale called the Kyo music scale that he bases his compositions on. A new scale system isnft something that someone comes up with very often. Basically all of the music that we in the western world are familiar with is based on the equally-tempered scale where the note eAf is at 440 Hertz, and all other notes are a multiple of the square root of 12 above and below that. Our musical scale is one of those centuries-old rock-solid standards that we base our interpretation of music on. Probably the only time that most of us are exposed to any music that is different from gDo-Re-Mih is when we are in an Oriental restaurant listening to the background music (secretly wishing that theyfd tune up their instruments). The Kyo music scale is based on a 9 Hertz factor of spacing between the notes. The scale wefre used to has seven whole notes, A through G, in an octave, while the Kyo scale has eight notes, K through R, in an octave. The reason the 9 Hertz multiple was chosen is that is that it is a known fact that the brainfs alpha waves run at this frequency when a person is in a relaxed state. The idea is that listening to music that resonates at this frequency will help put you in a relaxed state. The initial studies that have been done on the Kyo music scale confirm that listening to it significantly enhances alpha wave activity in the brain. In the trial, a monitor was started on a subject in a normal, somewhat stressed, state with high beta wave brain activity. After listening to one Kyo scale selection, the beta wave activity was reduced substantially, while the alpha wave activity greatly increased. Though the study may not be conclusive, the proof to me is that I find the music to be quite relaxing and enjoyable. What I find interesting about this music is that upon the first time of listening to it, some parts seem to be off-key. This is a natural reaction, because gDo, Re, and Mih donft have the same meaning any more in this music. Also, John includes a note on the jacket of some of his CDfs that if you are stressed, the music will sound strange. Upon subsequent replays, I notice that the music is, in fact, very much in harmony. The fascinating about this is that if I apply my own set of rules to this music, I find things wrong with it. If I am a little more open-minded, and try to appreciate this music for what it is, then I start finding the harmony and beauty in it. Johnfs third CD gSeascapeh was just released in August 2002. The other two CDs gWinter Collectionh came out in February 2002, followed by gInto Springh. Like many artists who are trying to get exposure to their work, he uses technology to produce and publish his own recordings. His works are promoted and sold on his website at http://www.john-k.com. To hear for yourself what I am talking about, please follow the link above to John Kfs website. You will find links there to hear some of his works at mp3.com. I will be happy to answer any questions that I can, and would be pleased to hear if you decide to do a story on John K. You may also contact him directly at scale_kyo@lycos.com.

After checking in to read the guest book, I would like to leave this excerpt from an article I read from a Bass Player magazine. What more can you expect from the man except another masterpiece. Jeff Lynch has it right. Thanks Jack
Ever since Jeff Berlin burst onto the scene over 20 years ago with his wonderful contributions to Bill Brufords excellent solo efforts, he has been extolling the virtues of Jack Bruce. As we all know, Jeff has had an illustrious solo recording career and is certainly a champion of the bass. It is only fitting that I end this article with Jeffs poignant and heartfelt thoughts about Jack: If it wasnt for Jack Bruce, the electric bass might still be in the dark ages. He is the very first virtuoso of the instrument. In Cream, the tonality of the band rested entirely with him. Clapton played the blues, Bruce played the orchestra. It never would have worked with a normal bass player. His solo records are individual jewels of musical originality. What would we all play like if Jack hadnt come along and grabbed the role of the bass player, twisting it into this living musical epic for all of us to be inspired by?

Jack Rocks. Since 1968 I have always felt Jack was one of if not the most talented musical artist on the planet. On Jacks recent trip to New York (October 18th at BB King) his performance was nothing short of spectacular. He is still the best and he is one cool human being as well. We are all aging together. And there is no question that Jack is not only aging gracefully he actually gets better with age. He really has not lost a step. Jack you continue to be the best of the best. By the way Jack if you are reading this Bob may rock at 50 but you remain now and forever the Cream of Rock. Thanks for keeping all your fans happy with your pure dedication to your music. I will respect you forever.

...was re listening to Goodbye just recently... and to Songs for a taylor... and some previously unreleased material on the Cream box set (hey now princess, clearout, etc...) ... and was wondering where Cream would have headed after 1968... those songs (the three Goodbye studio) are some of the greatest rock ''tunes'' ever put on disc. Anyway, i probably feel just a little nostalgic, but once in a while i always come back to that period and sort of re discover the complexity, the originality of that time period that you (Jack) and your friends (Brown, Baker, Clapton, Heckall-Smith, etc...) produced. So thank you Jack for the great music you've given me! Mario

October 18 aside, I still find it sad that an artist who was once an innovator in modern music has become content to live off his past 'glories'. I for one am rather sick of Cream songs- especially when performed by bands other than Cream. Ideas for new, original and innovative songs dwindling by the minute. I recall Cream saying "good-bye" in 1968. It's now what, 34 years later??? It's nice to visit the past but getting stuck there may be hazardous to one's creative juices. What's next? Vegas? Enough already. For some truly innovative and quality music a few suggestions: Death in Vegas, Daniel Ash's new CD, Travis, Something Corporate, Starsailor, Tori Amos, Moby, Coldplay, just to name a few. To Robert Clayton, Let me share a story I was told with you. It seems that Jack and Kip were sitting in a pub writing some songs together. while at a table next to them were a couple of blokes unaware of Jack's presence. They were talking about Shadows in the Air. One of them said to the other, It's that latin shit, I wish he would just play Cream songs. That statement was disheartening to Jack. But, It seems to me that Jack has three kinds of fans. 1. those who only want to hear Cream songs. 2. those who want to hear nothing but the new stuff. and 3. those who just want to hear Jack sing and play, no matter what the material is. Personally, I fall into the 2nd and 3rd catagories. But, kudos must go to Jack for trying to please all his fans. Hence, two shows at BB Kings with two different bands. One for the Cream freaks(which I admit to being when I was a boy) and one for people who want to hear to current material. I myself, attended both shows. And although I preferred the Saturday show, The Friday show was fantastic in many ways. To name just a few: To hear those young kids having fun playing that material was a blast. To hear Jack having fun was also a blast. Although the musicianship may not have been up to par with Jack(who is?). Jack pulled the whole thing off, and pleasing the Cream fans at the same time, by being just who and what he is: A FORCE OF NATURE! ps. those people you mentioned in your entry, Innovators?.... you must be joking.

I have made a number of comments in the guestbook over these past 3 years and have always thought that the people who have taken the time to contribute have one thing in common...that we are ALL JB supporters. Lately some of the shit that has been written concerning Jack's attitude has been a little over the top. As we in Australia have NEVER had the buzz of seeing Jack live, I feel pretty pissed off that the moaning about not saying hello or signing the supposedly mandatory autograph has been the main topic over these past few weeks. You lucky punters that have seen Jack over the years should be counting your blessings that at least you have seen the man live. We in OZ are still waiting!!! Clapton has been here that many times he is like a fart in an elevator...he won't go away! All I am trying to say in my very Aussie way is that Jack is the diamond in music and most other so called 'legends' pale into the background when it comes to the REAL thing. Hopefully one day soon Jack will get his arse over to this great country and we can see at last what most of you lucky buggers take for granted, Jack playing his tits off! Regards to everyone, Phil.

All of this recent rather personal stuff has been going on a bit long now - don't we all think? Can we perhaps get back to discussing or commenting upon the music? That's what it is all about isn't it?
Me, I'm off to see Jack in Manchester on Monday, and I'm really looking forward to it. However....
For the record - the most obnoxious 'rock'n' roll' star (and a faded one at that) I ever met was Carl Palmer (after a Quango gig) who basically ignored the group of fans who had waited to see him. He really did just choose not see them, or respond in any manner whatsoever. Personally, although always thinking him a great drummer, I had no other interest in him in particular, especially as I was speaking to the great John Wetton at the time.
Two of the nicest rockers I ever met - John Wetton and Jimmy Bain (he of Rainbow/Wild Horses) both had three things in common- (a) they were both excellent bassist/singers; (b) they were both very genuine and genial individuals, happy to talk about their craft and their own influences; and (c) they were both big fans of Jack and his music. When talking to John Wetton about how Jack's bass-playing had inspired me to pick up the old 4 stringer; he replied..."yes, me too - we all went to the same school didn't we..."
I thought this was the perfect tribute. So there...

Also, I think you people read to much into things anyway. Maybe jack or whomever your whining about was tired at the time. Think about it. For instance, a father comes home from working all day to find his children pleased to see him. Maybe all he says is "hi", and then goes to bed. It doesnt mean he doesnt love his children, maybe he is just really tired. It's like when I went to the king crimson show, at the end Robert Fripp stands up and walks off stage, not even stepping into the light. He wasn't being a dick, he's just humble. He doesnt care about fame and how people look at him, it's about his music. And lastly, I met Carl Palmer too, and he made sure everyeones autographs were signed and every question was answered. He seemded very generous to me.

It's been a while since I've been the Guestbook and today's perusal justifies the absence. There have been some suggestions over the last few months that Jack doesn't read the entries. My experience is that he, Margrit or someone in his management does. But given the present tone, why should he. In the tradition of Australian mateship, could I offer some support for my country Phil Watson. His attempt to stifle the level of bitching by highlighting that those who were perpetrating were doing so from the perspective of having actually seen Jack was the catalyst for the renewal of the absence of Jack in Australia issue that was a live issue, say 2 years ago. No one suggests that the site must be exclusively pro-Jack. But the level of complaint seems very petty when compared to the entries that have appeared over the years indicating appreciation by fans at Jack's personal dealings with them. Ask Marc Wickert the best moment in his life, and I have little doubt it was the moment he met Jack (with due deference to his meeting of the lovely Lorraine). I have had the benefit of some wonderful friendships (admittedly only in cyberspace) with people as a result of involvement in this site. Dennis Lawrenson was knocked out at the offers that were made to him from other Jack fans when he proposed to travel to see Jack earlier this year. A level of nastiness seems to have crept in. Sure its possible to scroll down, but its also possible to give up and go away. I'm not having a shot at you, Derek, and realise that running a site like this takes heaps of time. I am not suggesting censorship - but surely not all entries have to be kept indefinitely. I recall that one of my more intemperate entries during the Jack not coming to Australia issue remained on site for ages, long after I had received an explanation that cleared the air. Lest anyone be in any doubt I am not seeking an argument. It's just that this Guestbook is really now resembling bad talk-back radio.

So Eric Jack & Ginger played Queen's University Student's Union Belfast in March 1967 - too early for me, the best we got was The Clash! Glad Jack is still going well, as I am really only familiar with his Cream stuff. Maybe I'll go out and buy some new stuff; that's what websites are for. At the expense of being accused of being a sad git I WOULD like to see Cream do a few re-union gigs . . .

Saw the Leg Ends of Rock show in Bradford last night. It opened with someone who was demonstrating guitar effects pedals, then a magic fairy appeared to blast his way through what could have been some interesting music but the volume and obsession with, again, guitar effects and how he looked in his costume made me turn off. Then a big bloke appeared with an other effect the ability to shove a thousand volts through his testicles. He reminded us that this was 1974 and then I remembered that was the year I moved on to other music!! The reason for attending then appeared Jack Bruce. After a little doodling on the bass, presumably waiting for the magic fairy to adjust his pose, Jack launched into Sunshine of your love, NSU, SWLABR, Were going wrong and White Room. The magic fairy and his assistants werent always able to keep up though but I managed to enjoy Jacks performance. After Jack had gone off, damn me if the effects pedal demonstrator didnt appear again. I nearly left having seen our man, then thought maybe he would be back and do a certain Beatles song (to which our American friends had been treated). I was not dissapointed, though I think Jack clearly was. He must have felt a little like me because he had changed into this outdoor coat. Regrettably he failed to get the attention of the band, which resulted in a cocked up beginning to Eleanor Rigby, but I was glad to see him perform it; I feel free followed, again with bits missing, down to the band again. When the big bloke came back and Jack left, then so did I. As we left a woman, who was upset and arguing with the venue staff, stopped me in the foyer and said Do you realise that the band you came to see hasnt been on? I said I had come to see Jack Bruce and that Id seen him. I fled, as Jack probably had, into the night but even now wonder what she meant. Jack, please you just dont need this.

Having attended the same gig, I have some sympathy with Harry. There was Cream, Hendrix and Led Zeppelin; after that came a load of dull and noisy imitators and I too gravitated to jazz, folk and alternative music like Henry Cow; whilst steadfastly following the career of one Jack Bruce who musically continues to get better and better. The Legends of Rock tour seems to spend most of its time extolling the virtues of these boring, noisy posers and copyists. Their music lacks the crafted songs, harmony and dynamics that we have come to expect from our Jack. It is no wonder then that some of his own set did not get the respect from the band that it deserved; and I was surprised at the sometimes insensitivity of Uli van Roth who has played on a number of occasions before with Jack. When he announced that Were gong wrong was more appropriate now than ever, did he mean world politics, the current music scene or his own personal musical dilema, I wonder. If its a Cream re-union thats wanted, the band fielded at South Shields a few years ago are ideal Jack and the two Garys brilliant. Stick with them if thats what you want to do Jack.
It all comes down to this continued obsession with a band from a third of a century ago. I get rather angry when the majority of fans on the website harp on about a return to the past and ignore all the brilliant work he has done since. Some even admit to not having heard anything since Cream. As Si Kahn said Whats the use of two good ears when you cant hear those you love. (Sorry another Quote!!) This isnt any old rock star trading on his past this is a genius continuing to produce great works of art. Is there any wonder the guy gets upset and doesnt want to talk to fans some nights. For his sake, stop the bickering, wake up, open your ears, listen and move forward. Jack can take you there.

Way back in November 1977 my best friend at the time and myself procured tickets to the first of two of the Jack Bruce Band's showcase gigs at the Bottom Line. I was particularly psyched because I hadn't seen Jack perform live since 1972 and was a big fan of Simon Phillips. My friend happened to walk past a table where two attractive young women were sitting and it was obvious from their accents that they were British. My friend, never one for subtlety (God rest his soul), walked right over to their table and asked the woman who looked like Janet Godfrey if she in fact was Jack's wife. (We had a family potrait printed in a Cream songbook and this woman resembled the woman posing holding one of Jack's sons as an infant). She seemed quite surprised that we recognized her and invited us to have a seat and chat for a bit. My friend had smuggled an 8mm camera into the club and somewhere in the world there exists video of me with my arm around Janet Godfrey and vice-versa (she was a bit "tipsy" as she put it". My friend moved away to California and was later murdered, so I believe his brother has the video tape- but we've since lost touch). We ended up sitting at her table for the duration of the show. At the end of the show she asked if we'd like to see the second show and walked us to the ticket booth and instructed someone to "Please add these two gentlemen to the guest list for the next show." She was a very personable, kind lady who made a couple of Jack fans very, very happy. It was quite a thrill to meet and talk with someone so close to Jack and who also co-wrote lyrics with Cream. Thanks Janet, wherever you may be. By the way, Jack and the band were in great form for both shows that night playing a nice mix of songs from 'How's Tricks?', a couple of tunes from 'Harmony Row' and 'Songs for a Tailor' and of course some Cream tunes as well. Those were the days! (pun intended)

Must admit I thought this would be a night with only one artist providing anything decent. I was so right. The other so called legends were just staggeringly awful. Until Jack came on it was 0 out of 100. Up till then it was the most boring, crass, untalented, unimaginative pile of shite I have ever seen/heard. Frank Marinos Strange Universe. Nuff said. Totally self indulgent twaddle. 1 out of 100. Uli Jon Roth, Transcendental Sky Guitar. What a complete pratt. A pretentious one at that. No wonder I stopped listening to most rock music after Cream, Jimi etc. 0 out of 100. He was doing his version of Vivaldis Four Seasons and then Maria from West Side Story. Then he did a suite about Hiroshima, man. Please. Come on Uli, Vivaldi and Leonard Bernstein were way out of your league. Leave their music alone.
As for Glenn Hughes, he was introduced as The Voice of Rock. Considering who was coming later I thought that was priceless. He was so bad it is difficult to describe. His singing consisted of a few grumbled, mumbled undecipherable words and then several high pitched screams. The music was an unstructured noise. So loud it sounded like just one note. Maybe it was. Crap, crap, crap. A lot less than 0 out of 100.
Then Jack at last. He materialsed from the back looking cool in a long coat playing Sunshine riff. He must have been hot though. Sound balance left a lot to be desired. Bass was so loud you could not hear the intricacies of his playing. Difficult to hear a lot of the vocals too as they were drowned out. Jack seemed to be in fine voice too. Pity. Uli Jon, the drummer and co had just about learned their lines and on the odd occassion managed to sound remotely like Eric and Ginger. After Sunshine we got NSU, then SWLABR and a spine tingling Were Going Wrong and White Room. After Marino did some passable attempts at Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and All along The Watchtower, Jack came back (minus coat) and sang Elanor Rigby and then I Feel Free. Never seen him play SWLABR or I Feel Free live before. Jacks numbers were fairly brief and disciplined. The rest of them strutted around and posed like clichéd, headless chickens.
Then the atrocious Hughes started to mangle A Whiter Shade of Pale. Not even a great song in the first place. That was enough. I headed for the door. Didnt care that Jack may be back for some en mass finale.
A mate of mine paid for the tickets as I treated him to Jack and The Cuicoland Express last year. I am glad I did not have to pay. There was no comparison. Over 2 hours of Jack music then compared to probaly not much more than 40 minutes badly miked here. Jack was good but the rest were A1 dire. As my friend said, what was Jack doing with this lot. His music has little in common with what they were doing.
For people who have never seen Jack it would be better than nothing, but I would not recommend this package at all.

Have just been to the masters of rock concert at Portsmouth Guildhall ,have to agree with all the comments that Dave Oswald made on the guestbook, everthing was terrible except jack bruce,I am just so dissapointed that the other players did not match his skill and thoughtfulness towards the music. I was absolutley stunned to have a song dedicated to me on the night and it will live in my memory forever. I am even more desperate now to see a full Jack Bruce concert because I feel I missed so much tonight.

So I heard that Jack's 50th birthday concert had been shown as a TV special in Germany. So I sent an email to his record label to inquire if there was a way I could get a video tape of it. And much to my surprise, the reply I got was from Jack Bruce. Himself. The Man. Now that's gracious and classy way beyond the call of duty. I'm sure he could have gotten somebody - anybody - to respond to me. But the fact that he answered me himself...you can all draw your own conclusions about the charaacter of this great artist. By the way, I put Somethin Els on for the first time in a while. This CD has been severely underated and/or ignored. I love Waiting on a Word, Close Enough for Love, and Criminality. They're some of his very best work. It's a fine, fine album, with some of his warmest, fullest vocals, and stunningly original arrangements.

First of all,I want to say that Jack sounds so great on the Government Mule album that he guests on.He is on the first cut which was a great idea:the "bang, you're dead" theory at work.I have been reading the GB here catching up and notice alot of strong feelings about Jack not signing and hanging out after a show.I totally understand the feelings because I always wait after, too.Jack and many other artists are just trying to save their poor, finite, overworked, beat up voices.I have seen Jack like that and I understood.I have met artists that are better socially than others in those circumstances. It can be hard sometimes after a show.,too....emotionally.some nights can be that way and we are only human.I am not saying Jack is one way or the other, but please go easy on the Man.

I'm just another guy who started playing bass in the late 60's with a garage band doing Cream tunes. Have followed your continuing career ever since. Add my name to the "gotta have Harmony Row on CD" list. (Is there any hope??)My absolute favorite song from that album is "Escape to the Royal Woods (on Ice)," which is listed but not actually included on some more recent live releases. How frustrating to buy the whole album especially for that song, and then discover it's not even on it!! I'm assuming that none of that is your fault, Jack! As far as all the criticism, and counter-criticism, may I suggest that a generous portion of humilty, grace, and forgiveness all around would make this guestbook (and the world!) a nicer place? To The Kee: Thanks for your support. Personally I never put Jack on a pedestal, it was more of a feeling of having some sort of kinship (for lack of a better word) because of the very intense emotions his songs evoked. In other words, I've always felt, as probably many who have followed this brilliant musician's career, that I 'know' him (through his songs- which of course is an illusion of sorts). There aren't too many artists who's work has literally sent shivers down my spine, brought tears to my eyes, and took me to 'places' that nothing else on this earth could (no matter what the potency). Expectations can be harming; I've always believed that everything happens for a reason. People can be blind at times to the effect of their actions on others. I just try to be a source of good in an often ugly, hateful world- but like all mortals, sometimes I fail. (It's nice not to be the target of all that hostility for a change- poor Angela!) To Bernie Worrell: Thanks for the photo on 10/18/02 after the show- it came out great! To Jack: Thanks for the music (and for the magic!) Peace and Happy Holidays to all! (What's a "blether"?)

Well, I saw Jack on Monday at Cambridge Corn Exchange as part of the Legends of Rock tour. Let me tell you Jack was in superb voice on the old Cream classics. Now, I am sure that he Eric and Ginger could play the same stuff REALLY well, so I say why not ? If they are not ashamed / embarrassed to play them in their own bands, they should not be worried about doing it together. Most of the bands from the 'classic' era still soung great, even better than they did then, so go on....if only for fun !!!Good music can be played and played, however old it or the musicians are. Well James Cello, I am pleased that Carl Palmer was the perfect gent the night you met him ... which only goes to show we all have our good days and our off days. We are all capable of being angels or assholes in equal measure ....
I've met Jack a couple of times (Salford University 1977, and after the Sam Sheperd play in which he appeared, in the late 80's - forget the exact date (and venue come to that)), and he was friendly and both answered questions, and happily gave out autographs. I met Ginger once back in 1979 (at a small gig in Liverpool) and offered to buy him a drink. When I got to the bar, his roadie came over and gave me about £20 to get all of us (my crowd of friends, and his group of mates) the drinks. Never actually met Eric properly, unless you count shoving an E.C. songbook through a dressing room window (Deeside Leisure Centre 1980), which he duly signed on the same page which both Jack and Ginger had also autographed previously. I treasure that book...
These days I am not nearly so starstruck anymore, although I did recently meet Jan Akkerman, and couldn't resist getting him to apply his moniker to one of his CDs, I had just bought after a gig.
My fondest memory must be of the wonderful Ian Gillan, who was such a great bloke to be in the company of after a 'Gillan' band gig at Liverpool University back in the late 70s. He chatted; posed for photos; must have signed a thousand autographs (including the leg of my jeans!!) and generally joined in the fun in and out of the pub we were in.
I suppose, however, there were probably post-gig nights when even he just wanted to scarper, and enjoy a quiet cup of cocoa and bed....
(... what Ian Gillan ... are you sure? ...)

To commemorate Jack Bruce's sixtieth birthday, I am organizing material of reprised JB songs performed by fans for release on CD in 2003. Envious and inspired by recent releases by the Todd Rundgren and XTC fanbases, I felt no time was better or no artist more deserving than Mr. B.
I am looking for reinterpretations of JB songs not note for note reproductions. I have made this clear to the people who have agreed to contribute but as always problems do arise. One fellow gave me a rendition of Jimi Hendrix' Spanish Castle Magic .. his logic being Jack performed the tune at a Hendrix tribute concert in Germany. Another group did a version of Sunshine of Your Love that was pretty much like the original version until the outro where in broke out into something akin to Skynard's Free Bird. Looking for musical diversity, I ask a local Rap group for their take on a Jack tune. Having never heard of JB, they ask me for a copy of a song to "redo". Rap being the art of words, I felt Politician would be the penultimate song to get a Rap refurbish. What I got was the sampled version of Cream's version with news sound bites stuck in between the verses ... kinda like Living Colour's Cult of Personality.
I turned down all of the above not out of musical snobbery but out of the desire to produce something totally original. I myself have completed six songs. SHIPS IN THE NIGHT was recorded using a local University String Quartet plus Harpsichord. The duet was performed by a male and female lead vocalist from a Baptist church. I persuaded the classical musicians to step it up a notch and the gospel sings to hold off a bit. A nylon string guitar solo closes the tune.
WITHOUT A WORD was recorded with a full fledged Salsa band. Although this version loses the mysterious dramatic mood set by the original , the horns and unrelentant percussion and high octane delivery emphasize the complex harmonic chord structure.
PLEASURE was performed solo by a seventies-ish barrelhouse blues singer/piano player. The tempo was cut way back and the song was performed much like Eddie Boyd's FIVE LONG YEARS. Mr. Boyd was a huge influence on Jack and PLEASURE melts well into this format.
TOKEN , another West, Bruce & Laing song , was performed with a power trio and a group of Yemen percussionist. The obvious Arabic influence of the tune made the choice of adding these percussionist a no-brainer. I was amazed at how easily the Yemen musicians followed the songs many abrupt and different tempo changes.
RUNNING THROUGH OUR HANDS was done up in 70's Disco style. With DDL sound effects, the moronic drum machine, sampled keyboard and obvious edits it comes out as ABBA meets Sammy Davis, Jr meets the Bee Gees meets Giorgio Moroder meets Chic. It's smaltzy, contrived, overdone and overbearing. In other words, its so bad that it's good. It should leave a smile on any Jack Bruce fan's face... after they finish heaving in the toilet.
METRO MOSKAU PART IV/FUR OKI was given a much more funkier/earthier treatment owed much in part to the American rhythm section. Though performed well, this Links song probably will not be considered because it is not a JB composition.
Only one of the above songs will be placed on the CD because it is my desire to have as many different people from all parts of the world participate on this tribute CD. If I receive enough material to put out the CD, I want to record one song with a part played by a fan from various countries. The technology is such that , for example, the bass part can be recorded in Australia, the guitar part in Japan , the vocals in Great Britain, the Drums in Chile and the keyboards in Canada.
If you are interested in participating in this project please email me. Please do not feel intimidated as I am not one off the supercilious judgmental snobs who inhabit these realms. The only prerequisite is that the song must be a Jack Bruce composition and the rendition must be somewhat different from the original. So if you record yourself with an acoustic guitar singing on the beach or just a sing-along in the car with the kids and the mutt, rest assured that all entries are welcome. I will not spew venom your way. The idea is to recognize, capture and glorify the spirit of Jack Bruce. I can think of no better present for the man who has everything. Recently bought 'The Best of Cozy Powell'. This is a fun album! If you haven't heard it, Jack features on six of the sixteen tracks, playing with Don Airey, Gary Moore, Dave Clempson, Max Middleton and of course the aforesaid Mr. Powell (RIP). A nice selection from three Powell albums 'Over The Top', 'Tilt' and 'Octopuss'. Probably preaching to the converted here, but check it out if you don't know it. Other artists featured include Jeff Beck, David Sancious, John Cook, Jon Lord and Bernie Marsden.

Yo Jack, it's been over a year since you've added anything to 'The Diary'- what's up? What about Hot Flash or whatever that band was going to be called? (Sounds like Margrit's influence again) With all the chatter and debate about your management, the 'mysterious no-show' one writer alluded to after the BB King gig on 10/18 at the 'VIP gig', and your erratic and contemptuous behavior toward your loyal fans after the gig, etc.??? How about enlightening us- what the hell's been going on? Your temper was flarin' like a pack of hemorrhoids that night! You need to chill dude- you and Bernie carried those guys pretty well and your voice was in amazing form but why so grumpy- you used to be a rather pleasant chap- you seem much the curmudgeon of late. Someone wrote that you were very disturbed by remarks made about "that Latin shit" referring to the additional percussion with the Cuico boys. Personally I thought the new material played pretty well live with the added percussion at the gig last December 12th (much better than the rather laid-back studio versions) and your voice hasn't resonated with force like that since I saw you perform 'Powerhouse Sod' at the Philadelphia Spectrum on December 15, 1972 in your black tuxedo- a truly memorable experience- you not only played your EB3 that night, you took playing the bass guitar to uncharted waters - it was YOUR Monterey Pop (and you didn't even need lighter fluid, no sir- the fire was in your Soul and you poured it out like it was the last time you were ever going to touch a bass. In my not so humble opinion, if you only wrote two songs: 'Like a Plate' and 'Pollution Woman', you'd have made a much greater musical statement than most musicians make in a lifetime of songwriting/performing- Cream songs aside. Personally, I'd prefer a West, Bruce and Laing reunion to the other idea. (Eric's a snob and Ginger gets even bitchier than you). I must say though you did blow me away with your performance of 'We're Going Wrong' that night (December 12, 2001). So just keep moving forward and do what you feel- and lighten up for Chrissakes. And please, get the trousers back on. (I wonder if you were thinking about John Lennon that night- I didn't mean to scare you- just wanted to tell you that you kicked ass and all that. Didn't you see the original vinyl copy of 'Harmony Row' I was holding? Thirty-two bleedin' years olde! It was not an explosive device and did not contain any anthrax (perhaps a few mold spores but they're generally harmless unless you happen to be allergic) Don't be so damned paranoid man- not all New Yorkers are crazy- and the one's who are live uptown on the west side- for the most part (j/k). Smile Jack: God luvs ya! Get that Scotch crotch where it belongs- all right now?

Thank you, Theo... As a kid, my earliest sonic memories were of hearing the music of the Beatles as it filled the rooms of my home... It may surprise some folks to know that even in Harlem, the Beatles were a major influence on those of us who would grow up to become music makers and music lovers. And John... Man oh man... Now there was a man who "Walked The Talk"... A Man who lived fearlessly, and taught Me something about Honesty and Integrity...And Love... On the night of this senseless tragedy, my older sister went into labor and gave birth to a son... Time to call and say "Happy Birthday"...

hi jack and everyone, today quite by chance i found a very interesting album i think has only recently been released in Australia: "Knights of the Blues Table", a tribute to Cyril Davies. i recommend it as a great blues album, with contributions by people including Goergie Fame, Duffy Power, the Jagger Bros, the great Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Nine Below Zero and the Pretty Things. But the highlights for me are two great pieces by the greatest JB in company with the incomparable Dick Heckstall-Smith, Clem Clemson, Ronnie Leahy and Neal Wilkinson (plus Mark Feltham). well worth listening !!!
just two more things. i heartily endorse the pleas of many others in asking when will Harmony Row be released on CD. second, why (just because we choose to eke out an existence thousands of kms from the rest of the world) does it seem that Australian JB fans are destined never to see a live concert. there are hordes of long-time and die-hard fans here, so come on Jack.

Hey Jack, Longtime fan from the Cream days, but really became a follower after Songs For A Tailor.... Wishing you and yours the best at the holiday time, and wonder if you can give us a brief update of your plans for the new year....I see you and Cuicoland working on the next album, which is great news, but wondering what your plans are after that? Perhaps another Cuicoland tour? Hope you come to Chicago again; the last show was fantastic from the front row!! Maybe a live album of you and Cuico? Or is it back to Hotflash? You've always been so diverse, it would be wonderful to know what to look for next so we don't miss out......best always to you, and thanks for so many inspiring pieces of music!!
Happy Holidays, Always your fan, Steve.
PS: Happy Holidays to all the fellow Brucefans...the Ringo video shows off Jack in the rock format wonderfully, if you need a last minute gift!!!

Jack,
In 1972 I bought a 68 EB-3, I loved the sound and feel of it and because it was what you played. In 98, I bought a Warwick Corvette Standard Fretless w/ Bubinga body because I loved the sound and feel of it But, I didn't know you were playing them. Now I'm about to buy a new amp and guess what, it's most likey going to be a Hartke 7000 to power my JBL 15 and 2-10 rig. Since we have the same taste in gear, in the future please let me know what's next.
Thanks, Michel Strauss
P.S. I still have and play my Gibson. P.P.S. Thanks for all the great music.

Hello Jack,
We three old hippies arrange soon a "commemoration" at my home remembering the B.B.King shows 18.-19. October, 2002. We will listened Cream-Bruce-Hanrahan-records all the weekend. By the way. Especially the Cuicoland performance was so beautiful that You must release the pieces of the live tracks on one CD. Think of Dark Heart. Did You record the shows? We live in hope seeing The Cuicoland in Europe soon. Happy music year 2003: Martti+Blues Vesa+Hessu
