Jack,

The time is now. I’m free. So ring up Eric, and let’s you, me, and him reform Cream and get out on the road. Sure, Ginger is irreplaceable, but with the three of you together, let’s face it -- he’d bail before you got as far as Milwaukee. Besides, Ginger was my very first drum influence so I know all his patterns. And Pete was one of my biggest influences as a lyricist, so I can take care of lyrics if we decide to record. Think about it, Jack. Cream together again. Falstaff would toss us a fortune in sponsorship. You can even pay me scale. And I’ll throw all my choices for the set list to your solo stuff. Imagine doing all of “Harmony Row” for 20,000 worshippers instead of putting them all to sleep with “Wonderful Tonight.” So let’s do it. You’d have a blast, and I need the groupies. And believe me, after twenty years of recording bluezak, Eric needs this more than both of us.

I eagerly await your reply, Randy

I love very much the "Turn it over" album of Tony Williams' Lifetime. Now I read in an interview Jack Bruce saying that he has tapes of Lifetime recordings which are much better than the ones released on "turn it over". Does anyone know whether this music has ever been released?

thanks!

Love all of Jack's work, esp. lately since '83 with Kip Hanrahan,on "Exotica" with Don Pullen and others, saw last Carnegie Hall Concert in NYC in '85, Would love to see Jack working with Carlos Santana and Kip Hanrahan together, told Carlos about Kip and Jack in '84 or so and I could make this happen if Jack is into it...See Carlos regularily... Would like to see more emphasis on rhythym, melody and Jack Bruce vocals and more in Santana's newer music...Would JB be into this? E-Mail me asap, can suggest to Carlos again soon... Jack you are my favorite electric bassist,I grew-up in So.Fla. and knew Jaco in the 70's,studied with Tony Williams in the mid-80's...Love Your Music... ALL OF IT! I cna hardly wait for the weekend when I'll have time to listen to the 3 first reissues. Jack has made so much great music over the years - and there are some gems there that can hardly be compared to anything else. Songs for a Tailor has been in my Top 3 ever since I got it in the early 70s. Thanks to Jack for the music!

I just wanted to express my respect for Jack Bruce's exceptional musicianship and artistry. Jack's recordings and performances have inspired and excited my musician friends and I since our little garage band played Cream songs at local dances when we were pre-teens in 1968. Thank you from my heart.

Hi, I do remember a very impressing Concert in Kiel/Germany in 1985 or '86 which I haven't found in the "history". The "theme" was "Indian experimental Music" - at least none of Jacks songs were played. Jack was mostly seen at the keyboards and occasional vocals whereas Mr. Nauseef (?) and Mr. ??? took over the percussion. This was really amazing and showed what a superb musician Jack Bruce is(and his partners on stage, too!).

Interesting "How's Tricks" is being re-released! I listened to the "old" CD this morning on the way to work and I say AGAIN:

IF, IF, IF Jack, Eric and Ginger did ONE more tour/release...can you posssibly imagine how INCREDIBLE the vocals would be?

Forget ( how could we! ) the bass and guitar playing! Jack's voice and Eric's together once more would reduce any and all other rock vocal efforts to sewage!

How long can we go on beating this dead(?) horse? We can only hope this comes to pass before we all leave the planet!

I'm writing on behalf of my musical mentor, jazz guitarist Bill DeArango, now in his eighties, retired in a nursing home. You may be familiar with his 1940s work with Sarah Vaughan (her first recording session), Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Paul Motian et al...Bill owned a music store/studio here in the late 1960s, was a big Cream fan; unlike many of his contemporaries, he's always kept abreast of current styles. One of our audience once told us that Anton Fier had come to listen although we didn't notice him. Anyway, Bill sends his regards. I have quite a few unreleased tapes of him, one from a 1973 concert with Tony Williams, glad to send some if you'd like...I read the interview where you said that Viet Nam veterans were still writing to thank you for keeping them alive with your music - that very much moved me. You really had quite an impact over here...Thanks for the musical moments...All the best, Jonathan

Jack: Just a quick note from a long-time musician who's only been heard in bars, dives, (anywhere we could play) in the Midwest US....though I am now the ripe old age of 52, your style of playing and singing has influenced me since I first started at 16. Try as I might, though, my tapes always come out sounding more like David Crosby!! Oh well, I guess it only goes to show...there's only one Jack Bruce! (By the way, the bathroom at Chuck Berry's isn't NEARLY as dangerous as his rehearsal room... ask Keith Richards).

Blues And Boogie Explosion

I first heard of this title when doing one of my frequent "Jack Bruce" searches on Ebay about 8 weeks ago. While I don't claim to be an expert, I consider myself pretty familiar with Jack's body of work. At first, I assumed that it might be one of those labeling errors from "All Music Guide" (Cooleyhighharmony anyone?)so I decided to do as much research as I could. Well, nothing turned up except that I was able to determine from a scan of the CD cover that Jack was indeed listed as a player and the other musicians were, for the most part, participants in the Rocket 88 project. So purely in the interest of research (hehe) I tried to win the auction. At the last minute I was "sniped" but further research enabled me to track down a copy from a German seller. Words fail me. How did this gem remain unmentioned in any Jack discography or any discussion of Jack's body of work? Here are 16 killer tunes (9 songs and 7 alternate versions) that rank among the best of Jack's blues performances. According to the liner notes, this was a project put together by pianist Bob Hall in 1990 and recorded "direct-to-disc" in Ludwigsburg, Germany (yes, it's a DDD cd!) but not released until 1998. It still doesn't explain why I've not only never heard of it, nor have I ever heard it alluded to anywhere. Anyway it's on the Jeton label and it's Jet 60 007. The players are Bob Hall, George Green, and Ian Stewart- piano; Danny Adler- guitar, vocals; Hal Singer- tenor sax; Willie Garret- alto sax; Charley Antolini- drums; and of course Jack Bruce on rollicking, boogying, balls-out bass. He has an extended bass solo and co-wrote "Rainmaker". The cuts are- 1. K.C. Jump 2. I Need You (alternate) 3. All Night Long 4. Night Train 5. Chicken Shack Boogie 6. Back In The Chicken Shack 7. The Fish (alternate) 8. The Rainmaker 9. Old Bill 10. K.C. Jump (altenate) 11. I Need You 12. Chicken Shack Boogie (alternate) 13. Back In The Chicken Shack (neither take is labeled "alternate") 14. The Fish 15. The Rainmaker (alternate) 16. Old Bill (alternate)

Let the hunt begin!

just bought the cream bbc sessions cd.so good to hear the live sound that you conjure up.we go back a long way jack.i first saw you play with graham bond at the fender club, kenton, near harrow.(1964 or so?).that was it! you guys just blew us away and we never missed seeing you.my mates and i reckoned that you should have added a hot guitar player to the band(we all thought a lot of mr clapton).we got our wish minus graham bond.i remember clearly a gig at the starlight ballroom (this was not really a muso`s venue but a dance hall) we arrived late and expected to get a poor view of the stage.not so!there were only 2 rows of seats, right in front of the stage all empty.an amazing gig, and bearing in mind that the stage was only 1 ft high, we were eyeball to eyeball. during this period me and my mates had a band going, with me trying to be you jack.our guitar player through this period was a certain alan parsons, who at the time was working in emi`s factory.we were called the earth and used to do many of your songs.i bet alan never mentioned it? i met you finally in 2002 at canterbury fayre, when you were trying to eat your kebab. thanks for all of it jack

For any Australian readers, particularly those in Sydney, Red Eye Records have the new re-issues in stock @ circa $36.00. They had 'How's Tricks' and 'Things We Like' in stock the other day. Unfortunately I was pressed for time and didn't find out if the others were/will be in. But it's a start! Red Eye also has a web site and does mail order I believe, so if you're in the bush it might save you getting them in from USA or The Old Dart. Also, I would suppose the excellent MOJO store around the corner would have them or get them for you asap. Those guys are great and they know their stuff.

Jack: You are the best and most-prolific,and innovative, imaginative electric bassist that has ever lived, even up there with James Jamerson and people like Jaco,Jonas Hellborg,Entwistle,Greg Arama, and others that have moved-on to the outer-worlds...You can never play too-much! I loved the Track: "Timeslip" on "Out Of The Storm" LP,I loved that Jam,it is great... I would love to see you playing again with Steve Hunter and also maybe together with Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter both together on Lead-Guitars... I was there at the shows in '89 with Ginger Baker and Blues Scarceno and I was impressed with everything at those shows, and had thought that both yourself and Ginger had gotten alot better and had matured immensely as players, the only missing-link was the guitarist,as he was playing in his own world and not together as a unit with you and Ginger... I had visions of people that we always loved like Adrian Gurvitz,Terje Rypdal(Norwegian Hendrixian-Influenced Icy-Space God/Composer/Virtuosso Extrordinaire,or someone like the two-formentioned players playing with you and jamming endlessly in a rhythmic-frenzy as on the forementioned track: "Timeslip" which is the only track that I always miss when ever I have seen you play lately...Also the track "One" is great from that lp and you have done that live...Also I miss the times when you had played with West,Bruce & Laing, and I sincerely think that Leslie West really needs you in the band: Mountain again,to replace the brilliant bassist and musical-genius:the Late Great Felix Pappalardi... When I have seen you in the last 15 or so years here in S.F. and also in L.A. and Berkeley, after the gig,I stand there and say to myself: "Magically Delicious",The music is that great and when people say Bruce,I don't think of the manish-lad from Asbury Park,I think of J.B. and the brilliance and supreme-magic in that music over any other BRUCE! You're the absolute best Jack and you should be into your music like you are as you are up there with Jimi and all of the best that have played music in this world...The Very Best and Most-Majestic AND BRILLIANT,Tony Williams was right also when he said that he loved your bass-playing,it's REALLY GREAT! Would you ever consider jamming with some of the musicians here in the Bay-Area here in S.F.look me up and I will put you in touch with Greg Errico(Sly & The Family Stone/Weather Report drummer/Producer) and Carlos Santana and Gary Duncan(Quicksilver M.S.) and players like that.Would like to see you doing some of the stuff that you did with Kip Hanrahan with some Bay Area Local Musicians...Like the forementioned on Tracks like : "God Is Great" or Others...Out Into The Fields"..."Harmony Row" is still one of my most-all-time favorite albums ever... And it is a masterwork to my ears...Timeless... Wonderful and Sounds fresh with every listening.. I love the syncopation of your bass-playing on: "Time Slip"...I would love to jam with you anytime as I am a drummer and love that style of playing more than any other rock-style that I have heard ever in Rock Music...It still holds up and does'nt sound that dated...Cream-music lives forever! Keep-up the good work J.B.I'm gonna fight for you J.B. The ONLY BRUCE!

I am thrilled that Jack's great albums are available again after so much time. I saw Jack, with Cream, in early 1967 at a youth centre one Friday night in Basildon. I was only fifteen years old, and it was one of the most fantastic gigs that I have ever attended. I was also present at the first of the two farewell concerts at the Albert Hall. It was great, after all these years, to have a chance to talk to Jack after a concert at the Cliffs Pavillion, Southend during November 2002. He had been doing a few of the old Cream favourites, which was well worth it after sitting through a load of heavy metal from the other performers. When I said I liked his album 'Shadows In The Air' he shook my hand and said 'Thanks mate,' after signing my ticket. I got Jack and Eric Clapton's autographs from all those years back in 1967. It was great meeting you at last Jack - God bless you for sticking to your musical principles over the years. Happy Birthday on the 14th - I hope you have a great celebration. All the very, very best to you - Bob Cross (I would love to play guitar with you).

Look,

For years I have been "singing" the praises of the legend, the greatest electric bassist and perhaps all around musician in contempary history!! Jack Bruce! His talent and ability are beyond belief. No exaggeration as you all know! The last thing I need to see before we all end up in wheel chairs.........is a Cream reunion!!! This would be the ultimate "cream on the cake" for untold millions of fans. What else left is there out there?? Oh yeah......... a Kiss or Fleetwood Mac reunion??? Truly laughable. C'mon 'slowhand' Clapton, I understand YOU are the lone hold-out here!! NEVER have you played as fine as you did when you were with with Jack and Ginger!!! Never!!! You OWE it to your fans (many that are Cream fans in the first place anyway) Get with the program Mr. Clapton!!! and give the fans what they deserve and want!!!! CREAM!!!! LAY IT ON US!!!! PS LET US NOT FORGET TO DISCUSS ANOTHER LEGEND.............Ginger Baker. One of the worlds (if not the best) drummer. He is responsible for so many todays greats in getting them started, like Bill Buford, the late John Bonham, Stuart Copeland to name a few!! Ginger Baker is like fine wine, getting better (if thats possible) with each passing year!! Incredibly talented and phenomenal!!

How fantastic to finally have a CD copy of "Harmony Row", and what a great job Universal have done on all the repackaged reissues. In fact all the discs are excellent and the long-awaited "Jet Set Jewel" was certainly well worth the wait. A very 1970's cover to boot...(is it the original planned sleeve? and why isn't is a Jack Bruce BAND release?)

There are some real undiscovered gems amongst this lot - the original version of "Without A Word" being a particular fave (the only studio track from this particular line-up); a really unusual version of "Sunshine" on the "Live '75" disc which is a great performance overall; and the oddly titled extra instrumental on "Things We Like"; and of course so much more...

If you haven't got them yet - what are you waiting for? Does anyone know anything about the compilation album which I haven't seen yet (I think it is called "Rope ladder...")?

All that is required now is for the Beeb to release the 1977 Jack Bruce Band "In Concert" performance which from memory was the BBC's first quadrophonic live broadcast - and - the studio sessions Jack did also at the Beeb in the early 70s. And what about a live Lifetime album?..........

But until then there is much to rediscover and enjoy. It's been a long wait to see this stuff finally given the appropriate just treatment, but has been well worth the wait.

Oh, yeah - and why has "Pieces of Mind" suddenly become "Peaces of Mind".........?

Dear Jack Heard you for the first time at the age of 7 when my older brother brought home Wheels of Fire 35 years ago... and have loved your music ever since! I can feel the soul in your vocals deep down inside...where it shall dwell forever. I was inspired to pick up the bass guitar in my teens...played with friends often and had alot of fun. Now my own kids are listening to you! Just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful gift of great music you have given me all my life. Take care and keep on rockin’!

Hi Jack, best wishes to your 60th birthday.

There is much to say in order to appreciate your work. Already in the late 60s you gave the bass a new dimension by your revolutionary style of bass-playing. Many of the songs you wrote are wonderful. Your voice is unique.

I have learnt quite a lot from your music - thank you very much. All the best.

Hey yeah! Hey yeah! (I can't sound as marvelous as you singing this expression!). Anyway, I wanted to wish you a Happy 60th Birthday today. You've really survived the rock n roll wars unlike some of your more unfortunate colleagues. I was wondering, did you ever have the opportunity to play with legendary Bay area guitarist John Cipollina (speaking of unfortunate colleagues). As much as I love Eric, I think Cipollina had a more distinctive sound. I know you played with his Quicksilver mate Nicky Hopkins (the best pianist bar none) when you recorded the song "You've Got To Have The Blues" when you recorded in the Bay area. Anyway, you've provided me with many, many memorable hours of listening and please keep those wonderful vocal pipes and fantastic bass lines going for many more years. You're the best! Happy 60th!

Dear Jack I want above all to say .. "thank you"! You inspired me in 1967 to pick up a bass and play like you. Thirty six years later I'm still playing my Gibson EB-3 in the only bass style there is, the Jack Bruce style of 'lead bass'. Many years ago I recieved the greatest compliment. After a set some one approached me and said "the way you play reminds me of Jack Bruce, ever hear of him?" By the way, the best concert I have ever attended was at Radio City Music Hall in my home town of N.Y.C. in 1972. I saw two legends on the same stage. West,Bruce & Lang! Thanks Jack, your the best.

I take every opportunity to catch his live sets,as a side man or when his band is appearing somewhere in New York. I loved the "Abbey Road" tribute and it really moved me to hear Jack do Beatle songs.I especially enjoyed the "Cream of Jack Bruce" at B.B. Kings Club and I attended both nights! I can't get enough of this musical genius and SUPERSTAR. Keep on playin' and singing JB. I never tire of your music and I am listening to "Shadows In The Air" as I write. Love,Peace, and Happiness.. It's difficult to enter a message on a site where it might be seen by the best there is at what he does. I've got the same story to tell that everbody else does. Been a fan since 1970, started playing bass as a teenager after hearing Jack, named my daughter Victoria Sage, you know, we all know. I guess I've seen Jack about a dozen times now. I've seen some really outstanding shows. I remember one really bad show (no fault of Jack's). It was in a little club here in Cleveland that had a capacity of about 400 and there were probably close to twice that squeazed in. My wife and I were squashed up against the stage right in font of Jack. We were standing on a sea of empty beer bottles. People were setting empty beer bottles all over the front of the stage, even in front of Jack's vocal mic stand. As expected Jack's playing was great, but the sound was horrible, non-stop feedback! Jack kept telling the engineers to get the monitors together but it progressively got worse. After resigning to the fact that these incompetant technicians were trashing his show he sort of, well, BUMPED his keyboard off it's stand and CLEARED the stage of all the empty beer bottles in his way.

I also remember the great show in the mid 80's at Carnegie Hall with Kip Hanrahan. My wife and I met Jack after the show and had a few drinks with him at the bar. He gave us big bear hugs. I love Jack. He's the real deal. He's forceful and aggressive, yet sensitive and thoughtful. I really believe his music says a lot about his personality, there's a lot going on here.

What is happening to music these days? Why can't young performers learn from the integrity of musicians like Jack? I'm the house sound engineer in one of Cleveland's largest concert clubs. I hear the worst music I've ever heard in my life on a nightly basis. I don't understand why vocalists in hard core metal bands need monitors, are they afraid they might emit a cookie monster growl out of key?

I'm not a very good bass player, but I'm an excellent sound man. Promoters call me THE MONSTER. I've been studying every nuance of jack's voice for over 30 years. I know exactly what frequencies define the characteristics of his bass sound. I hate hate feedback, and I know how to get rid of it instantly. Jack, if you see this, please, please take me away from this shithole. I won't let you down.

Happy birthday Jack!

ALSO REALLY DIG TRAINTIME, THE PERFORMANCE AT FILLMORE YOU GAVE WAS AND STILL IS A CLASSIC!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT TUNES, HOPE YOU COME TO CHICAGO AGAIN SOMETIME, SAW YOU AT PARK WEST WHEN YOU WERE TOURING WITH "I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO THIS" BACK IN 1981. LOVE THE TUNE DANCING ON AIR. Jack Bruce is the reason I am a bass player, as opposed to being the worst of three guitarists in a band who was handed the bass, if you know what I mean...

When I got out of the US Navy in 1981, I joined a band with a few new acquaintances and volunteered to play bass, somewhat regretfully. A friend of mine said not to despair, that playing bass could be cool, and turned me on to what Jack did on "Crossroads." I have not looked back.

Great! Good to find a website dedicated to the greatest bassist since Bach, which would be enough for most but the best voice in rock'n'roll to boot. Couple of dates that weren't in the file:- June 9th 1967, Civic Hall Wolverhampton. Only about 100 of us there for the best band around. Superb gig all the same. June 19th (or thereabouts)Carlton Club, Eardington Birmingham. The Carlton became famous as Mothers in later years. In 1967 the management were so hip they thought that a trio of spotty 16 year olds were Cream. We were chucked out and told that the club didn't open for another two hours. Mooching round we saw Jack leaning on the roof of Ginger's Interceptor chatting to Ginger and Eric sitting inside. Amazing gig standing six feet in front of Ginger's enormous drumkit and all that amplification(?)Well it was big stuff in 1967. Love the site. All power to you.

Good to see you are keeping the fans up to date on your diary page...George fell of the perch 18 months ago...obviously busy times for a busy man. Maybe your management could drop a few entries into the diary, you know, just to keep the paying public up to date with your latest adventures, if you are having any that is. Keep up the good work Jack. By the way, the DVD is pretty fucking good. Enjoy the northern summer. Phil.

Just a quick note to say that Jet Set Jewel is a great album with some of the strongest songwriting, singing, and playing I've ever heard from the Master. Go out and buy this - even if you already have Willpower. It's more than worth it.

My very first fan mail. It's nice to have a chance to say thanks to Jack. I bought my first bass after hearing Disraeli Gears and still gig three times a week after all these years. As I grew older, Jacks influence opened my ears to the styles of music that have been a sountrack to my life, and Pete Browns lyrics still remain some of the most evocative ever written.I suppose his mainly influence on me was to inspire me to innovate, not immitate, so for that, thanks Jack.

I had heard a few years ago about a tour with both: Ulrich Roth and also Michael Schenker on guitars, and then another tour with Vernon Reid on Guitar, either of these line-ups would be truly incredible and would blow me away, what's happened with this tour of USA and when will you be touring Calif.? I would love to see the Roth/Schenker line-up and would go to every gig for sure, esp. if Ginger was added on drums,as he's the best! And you know that too Jack!

I have just acquired the remastered "out of the storm" album. I've not heard this for 25 years as my original record collection was tragically destroyed in a fire. This album still takes my breath away, in terms of imagination and musicianship as it did when I was a younger drummer/musician. Thank you for the enduring inspiration!

HI JACK, REALLY ENJOY YOUR WEBSITE AND JUST RECENTLY GOT SHADOWS IN THE AIR, GREAT SET OF TUNES. I REALLY LIKE THE NEW TWISTS ON SUNSHINE AND WHITE ROOM, AND IT IS GREAT TO HEAR TUNES FROM SONGS FOR A TAILOR IN A NEW LIGHT. I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO THAT ALBUM SINCE IT CAME OUT WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, STILL THINK IT'S THE BEST SOLO ALBUM YOU'VE DONE, ALTHOUGH HARMONY ROW IS A CLOSE SECOND. PETE BROWN AND YOURSELF HAMMERED OUT SOME GREAT LYRICS. ALSO JUST GOT A CD OF BEST OF CREAM REMASTERED, IN FACT I'M LISTENING TO DESERTED CITIES OF THE HEART AS I TYPE THIS, A GREAT TUNE. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT VISIT TO CHICAGO, LAST TIME I SAW YOU WAS IN 1980 AT PARK WEST. KEEP DANCIN' ON AIR, JACK,

FROM YOUR FAN, RON
