Howdy Dear Young Jack: Re: Blues Scarceno,I heard that the reason that you had decided on Blues Scarceno being in the '89 Baker/Bruce Line-up is because he had never actually supposedly ever listened to or heard The Cream..... I went to three gigs from San Juan Capistrano,to The Palace in Hollywood,to Ventura Theatre in my then 1968 Gold Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and enjoyed everything except Blues guitar-playing as it seemed to be out of sync with any form of actual bonding unison with the other 2 thirds of the band..It did'nt envelope the actual sound in a way that you had been blanketed with Clapton's playing or even Mick Taylor's...So Even though the other 2 3rd's of the band was brilliant and completely incredible and innovative and progressive...The guitar playing seemed to be a series of flashy Guitar-Proto-Type,Hammer-On's and influenced by people like Eddie Van Halen and others that mastered that type of technique,it lacked in soul and depth to me as it had very little bottom and was very one-dimensional as it was very sloppy playing...I would much rather hear an incredible player like Ulrich Roth from The Scorpions, circa 1973-1978 play with you and Ginger,or Allan Holdsworth...I have also thought about the possibilities of others like Neal Schon or Gary Duncan the indian Cat from Quicksilver Messenger Service playing with the band with yourself and Ginger or in the context of the Kip Hanrahan group that did the ever-wonderful "Exotica" and many others...I have spoken to Allan about it as I was partially responsible for Allan getting through to Enigma when he was selling his I.O.U. 1st LP on his then own label through his manager and Allan would like the idea of a band with yourself and Ginger Baker as he was much more of a fan of Eric Clapton then Jimi Hendrix, sadly enough, although that was always Allan's style...But of course quite righteously, then you could always get Uli and Allan together to be a 2000 21st Century version of Cream, crossed with Twin-Guitar Harmonies of Wishbone Ash and The Allman Brothers! This would be truly great Jack! Anyway,I have a really great label owned by a local cat here in the Bay Area: Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, whom would love to record yourself with Allan or Leslie West or Ulrich Roth and Michael Schenker...Also A Truly GREAT Name for another West Coast Version of The Next Kip Hanrahan CD Release would be "Phenomena",you could get old Eric Clapton & The Powerhouse band-mate: Stevie Winwood to replace the late Don Pullen on Organ and Keyboards.. There are loads of local Bay Area musicians like Gary Duncan(Part/Half Scottish!) and others like Carlos Santana,Greg "Hand-Feet" Errico and many, many others around here that would gladly pay homage to your royal greatness and genius/brilliance...You are the very best musician in The Cream and the real-world needs to know it and just how truly great you are...Contact Mike Varney at Shrapnel Records in Novato,CA (415) Area Code,if you are interested in doing a project like this with Allan and Uli,Michael Schenker,Neal Schon,Duncan,Santana or whatever comes to your mind Jack..."Phenomena" Lives as does Jack Bruce's great majestically God-given,magical music lives on eternally and forevermore...In Our Hearts and Minds..THANK YOU JACK FOR 38 TRULY WONDERFUL YEARS OF GREATNESS AND BRILLIANCE...YOU ARE THE BEST IN THE WEST JACK!

Jack, you are one of my all time fav musicians.I have made a point to see you live whenever you have been in the ny area. Your song writing, playing and that voice, unparalled. Why more bassists don't cite you as an influence is beyond me. I have been a drummer for 30+ yrs and regret not to have been fortunate enough to play with you. All the best Walter

Marcel,

Theme From Imaginary Western... what a great song. I really like the way Mountian did it at Woodstock. That guitar solo is one of the best ever. (Thanks for writing that Jack!)
Speaking of solo's... (how's that for a segway) my favorite rock song EVER recorded is the Cream version of Crossroads. The bass playing by Jack (it just kicks ass!) and the guitar solo's by Eric are just the best jam that was ever recorded. I never get tired of hearing it!
I have heard that Eric said it wasn't that good, that he was actually playing some of it wrong or something... but what the hell, there is nothing to knock about that recording at all. I have not heard a better live rock song since it was recorded 35 years ago. NOT ONE!!
I just read the book about Cream and in it, it mentions about the Cream performance at the R&R Hall of Fame induction (in 1993). Damn, I missed that entirely. I went to Amazon to see if it was recorded or taped and I see no release for it. Do you mean to tell me that that performance wasn't recorded (CD) or filmed (DVD) and relased?!
I have to see them doing Crossroads, White Room & SUnshine Of Your Love again. The version of Crossroads on the version on the "farewell tour tape (Albert Hall performance?)is passable but the overall video taping and editing of the video sucked. Does anyone know where I can buy the R&R Hall of Fame sound check or actual performance?
Have you seen the new Led Zep DVD? It is very good. That movie that was released years ago (The Song Remains the Same) just sucks in comparison. Who has some good tape of Cream so we can see something compatible fronm them. After all they are the band that got it all started!
Thanks for the info.

Hi,
Nice to see the solo albums available again!
I'm trying to put together a story on composer and pianist Mike Taylor who Jack played with and who wrote some stuff for Cream, is there any way for Jack to answer questions ? I'm contacting John Hiseman and maybe Dick Heckstall-Smith as well.
Cheers, Ian Green

Those who are interested may want to check out www.cloudsandclocks.net, an Italian music and culture free-ezine. It has a good overview of Jack Bruce's career and a review of the newly released live 2fer, plus a lot of other interesting stuff e.g. interviews with Hugh Hopper and the like. Nothing you don't know, but well written and good to see a European view.

Jack / Derek,
I've just got hold of a copy of the "The Canterbury Fayre" DVD which is great - a truly atmospheric gig which has considerable intimacy to it, especially the way it has been filmed. It reminds me that I remember seeing somebody officially videoing a gig I attended at 'The Grand' in Clapham, London in 1993 (band with Gary Husband and Blues Saraceno). Is there any intention to release this ever?....it was a brilliant gig - I was in the front row with some mates. I think we would even be on the film!!!
Also I have been listening a lot to the newly re-released solo albums especially "How's Tricks" and "Jet Set Jewel". What a great band that was and two amazingly complete and cohesive records they are. Curiously I have also been listening a lot to Jeff Beck's "Who Else?" album - the connection? One Tony Hymas of course. Has Jack ever recorded with Jeff Beck? The two master musicians move in such similar circles and have obvious overlaps in musical territory, besides the more obvious links via Hymas and Cozy Powell solo albums.
What a combination that would be Jack Bruce and Jeff Beck - both hailing from the early 60s London blues scene - their paths must have crossed many times over the years but no real collaboration ever? If Jack ever takes time away from the marvellous Chicoland Express.....well.....how about a venture with Jeff Beck? Perhaps with Bill Bruford or Ginger on drums and Carla Bley on keys...all the B's (or atleast four of them = "B4" or "Before").
Whatever, I think the Jeff Beck gig would be great.
In the meantime I eagerly await the new album. I'm still busy with the JB solo album remasters and also the Zep stuff recently released.....
Regards
Howard Johnston

Jack - I know what you need in a guitarist and I have the goods to fit that bill. I am a huge fan of the live Cream stuff (like Sweet Wine, Sleepy Time Time etc..) especially when the band is phasing in and out of time. If you and Ginger wanted to try it one more time and take a 3-piece Jam on the road I'll do it. My credentials? Well, there's a song circulating on the internet called "Traffic Jam" that is supposed to be a rare cut from Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray vaughan - we'll its me! How about this - here's a live version of it from 1995 as a 4-piece (basss, drums, gtr, sax) recorded from a boombox in a bar that I played - it sounds remarkably like the Klooks Kleek stuff you guys did in the 60's. This has not circluated. Check it out here: Traffic Jam LIVE 1994 Jack, I close my eyes and play the guitar. I can sing very well too and I write and collaborate. I'm serious - I can't do it without solid players and you and Ginger are the absolute best. You'll need a player like me (forget Gary Moore - he just doesn't get it) and I promise we can make it better than what you did with Clapton.

regarding the 1st live cream release; anyone that knew better and realized what a bad mixing job it was, was prompted to adjust the levels to bring out the most amazing bass playing and improvisational thought coming from jack. just the bass and drums would have sufficed alone.

Hi Jack, As a fellow Bassist who started my musical trip in 1967,I just want to say that of all the fine bass players around,You and Larry Taylor, have always been my favourites. I went from Violin to Bass Guitar, and completely by-passed regular guitar, therefore I think and play as a bassist should, and not try to be a lead guitarist on bass! To this day , two of my favourite pieces of live recordings, are Crossroads and Spoonful "live" on Cream's Wheels Of Fire set.
I fully appreciate the sensitivity and original approach you employ in your Songwriting, Vocals and bass playing. Your solo albums are very enjoyable as well as BBM cd.
All the best ! Hope we can catch up sometime. If you'd care to sign my guestbook it would be my honour! at; www.geocities.com/henry_correy/

It's been great to hear jet-set jewel. Live in '75 is fun too. I've been waiting a long time to really hear that band. Who knows the dirt? Why did they break-up? Mick Taylor left the Stones to do this band. Did they all hate eachother? Also will anyone out their send me a tape or something of Automatic? I've never been able to hear it. I also would appreciate if anyone has figured out the chords to Can you follow or other Jack Bruce Songs. I have to much of a tin ear to really hear the changes.

Hi, Mr. Jack, I have just listened to the first four remastered solo-works (en suite) which I bought in Cologne this afternoon. Whoever's idea it was to remaster these recordings - it was the best idea he ever had in his life (except it was the composer and musician himself). The CD's are of excellent acoustic quality and - what makes me very happy - all the artwork also seems to be done with a great deal of love to the music. So thanks again for that music which i am listening to since it first came out. It was the radio then. So - kind regards from Germany to England. H2M

Read about the ITV "Has Been" show with Ginger and felt very bad about it.
First, no matter what, he's no "has been", a dormant volcano perhaps but never extinct.
Second, sorry about his INS/IRS problems, which the UK seems to be bandwagoning as to re. his residence in S. Africa.
Third, hope he's not feeling too poorly what with the limp and cane.
Lastly, the bitterness over the past. Kind of makes me feel ashamed to have on occasion urged on a reunion of 3 very disparate elements.
More than anything, I wish Ginger all peace and happiness. Wish he had a website with a Guestbook so that I and many others could say so directly, so here's hoping he reads it here.

As an electric bassist of only about two years, I have a huge amount of admiration for Jack Bruce's work, and I hope to one day have at least a fraction of the immense skill that Mr. Bruce possesses. I love you man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've been my model ever since I heard you on Fresh Cream....saw every concert in LA saving your Whisky initial gig.
Everybody that knows me would tell you how much I think of you and your playing...you are the guy who made Cream run...
I'm still the only one I know that has Songs for a Tailor and Harmony Row.

dear jack!
belated congratulations to your 60th birtday. Hope it was as nice as your 50th bithday-concert for german tv station wdr - i still love seeing the performance on vhs. i play the drums in a rockband and ervery year when the sun shines we take out the instruments and the pa and make a little open air festival with one or two other bands. this year we played with the young talents of "sproud", the band of our bassplayer´s son, and "univibe and the tubemen", the second band of our singer and hammond organ player. AND WE DID A WUNDERFUL VERSION OF YOUR FANTASTIC SONG "THEME FOR AN IMAGINARY WESTERN"! we also played "neighbour neighbour" by the way. we´ve got it on double-cd and on vhs-video (2 h) and we want to give both to you as a present for all those wunderful music you´ve given to the earth so far. So plaese tell us your postadress and the belated bithdaypresents will come soon. the "l" in "ls" in my email adress is a small L, no big i. our name ist "einer fehlt immer" meanig one is missing ivery time", because we´re nine musicans.

Not much to say only that after 30 odd years of listening to his mucic and hearing every release I was surprised and later disappointed at how under rated he was portrayed in the mucic business Mr Bruce is an artist and Harmony Row is the testament to that right.

I have been a fan since the GB Org. Was able to see you during the "How's Tricks" tour in S.F. CA. Absolutely outstanding performance. You and S. Phillips melded so completely. I bought an old 63 or 64 Gibson EB3 to play on. All the other bassists were getting Fenders or Rick, but nothing could match the tones of the Gibson. And hell, Jack played one. Still have the bass after close to 25 years. Plays great. Alas, have trouble finding folks to play with. Still have all of your albums and now have the CD's to turn the younger generation onto you. Now I teach high school. Keep producing that great music. And if you can, the next time you tour come to northwest florida of somewhere close so I can see you perform once more. Well that is about it. Thanks for all the joy I have gotten from your music. Peace/Love

Jack: Ijust wanted to tell you that I have been following you for many years. I remember meeting you at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, the day after Christmas in 1981 when you toured with David Sancious, Clem Clemson and Billy Cobham. The "Good Rats" opened the show which was recorded on the mobile truck outside. My brother, Phil was your bass tech back then. What a SHOW!!!!!! It will stay with me as one of my fond memories of all time. When I returned home to South Carolina after that, my band learned "Livin' Without Ya" and played it for years. I got Phil a 1965 Gibson EBO for Christmas last year as a tribute to his working with you. Glad to see your solo stuff will be re-released, it's about time!!! Thanx for all the great music through the years. Keep Rockin'-Steve

Derek, There's going to be some self-promotion in this entry and I would invite you to review it before including it, just in case you think it inappropriate. In July this year Marc Wickert organised the first Jack Bruce Congress on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. It was a chance for some of Jack's Australian fans to finally meet after corresponding for a number of years.
Dennis Lawrenson and I got together to perform at the Congress and did a bracket devoted to Jack's and Cream's music, including Sunshine of Your Love, 52nd Street, White Room, Sitting on Top of the World, Badge, Born Under a Bad Sign, Crossroads, Theme for an Imaginary Western. We also did a couple of other brackets of material by artists such as Garry Moore, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison and others.
If any of your visitors are interested I have posted sample videos and photographs of the performance on my website www.selftort.xs4.info. The videos can be found on "The Music" page of the site. There is also a version of "Theme...." that I recently recorded. I'm not happy with it yet and will re-record it.
We are hoping to hold another Congress next year, but are undecided as to venue. We may choose Sydney or return to the Gold Coast.
Looking forward to the new release.
Regards
Brian Ralston

Jack: I've been seeing you in NYC since Cream. I used to play along with "Goodbye Cream" on the drums and YOU made me teach myself the bass. I've since moved on to guitar as well (although I still play my EB0 in a jam band) and play in a marginal Cream/Mountain cover band. If you heard me sing Politican you'd be calling lawyers! I'm the guy who wears the "ON BASS FINEST IN THE WORLD JACK BRUCE" tee shirt to all your New York gigs. You noticed it at the Westbury Music Fair Ringo gig and waved to me. I'll never forget that. I piped Cream songs into my younger brother's crib and now he's my bass player! You've been a big influence to us and other players I know and for that I say thank you. God bless you and keep on tearin' it up. Brother Bill of the Kessler Bros. Band.

So,a good friend of mine gave me a cd of "Turn It Over" with the bonus track of "One Word." I saw Tony Williams Lifetime perform this song at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1970.I have looked for this song since then....it was worth the wait! It is one of my favorite albums of all time.To hear this music on cd is through the roof for me.This is one of the greatest bands of all time,I believe.Nobody could do what they did! Jack's contribution to the band was one of a kind,as we might expect! I saw the band twice...wow!! Can't wait for the new solo cd...congrats to you Jack.

Hello. A burning question: At the end of "Crossroads" on "Wheels of Fire" are you saying ..."Eric Clapton please, the vocal", or "Eric Clapton, lead and vocal" Hmmmm. Just listened to the BBC Sessions CD. Extraordinary, the version of "Traintime" is so much faster than on "Wheels"...the whole collection is so bluesy and original...after all the years of listening, these takes sound so fresh ( no pun intended)
I saw you at the Bottom Line in new York and at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ with the Jack Bruce and Friends tour in 72?; Billy Cobham, Clem Clemson, etc. My friend Bert H. was your road manager and he had your fretless base at his house during the gigs. Not in tune, and with permission, I twanged it a little. A huge moment in my life. Second huge moment, when you played The BB King Blues Club in New York earlier in 2003. You were dressed horribly in pajamas...but I digress. I was right up front and you opened with NSU. The power of your voice, the vibrato, and the playing....blew me away. One could close their eyes and it might as well been Fresh Cream/Live Cream redux. The other selections were excellent, "Sleepy Time" was excellent...could go on and on...I was outraged that there was not more publicity for this show and was especially disappointed the classic rock station, 104.3, with that blowhard Scott Muny, did not cover this or at least interview you. WHY?
Your whole musical portfolio, Cream and beyond, is amazing and has brought me so much pleasure. Here's to you and many more years of music.

Jack: Viewing this web resource brings me back to seeing you perform, at The Coach House (San Juan Capistrano, CA), probably sometime in 1995. Your singing, bass and keyboard playing, and overall showmanship were outstanding! I love how you performed "Theme From An Imaginary Western" and "Deserted Cities of The Heart". What a night!!
You're bass playing is phenomenol.

Is the song Kellys Blues on More God Than Jack about Dr David Kelly or someone else? Can anyone ask Jack or Pete please? It is an amazing song. Made me cry. Slowly , taking my time, feeling my way into this new CD. Sounds pretty adventurous. No playing safe here. Hope it sells big-time.

Have been a fan of yours seems like forever. Wonder what ever happened to the collaborative effort that was reported between yourself and B. Dylan? Is there any material on tape of that period? Also, I wonder if you ever have plans to travel and play in Asia, specifically old Siam. I have spent much of my life there and bumped into such characters as Jagger and Eartha Kitt on occassion (though not together). A well thought out and executed excursion to Bangkok would be rewarding. Thanks for all the tunes over the years. TGS

2 things:
1. In the end credits of the new Jack Black movie "School Of Rock" (excellent, by the way), Jack's co-writer credit for Sunshine Of Your Love (prominently used in the film) is "John Bruce". Kind of ironic, since the film is an homage to all things rock; and
2. Who is channeling Steve Winwood's Traffic-era B3 during They Invented Race?
