Aside from his bass playing I will remember him for his ethereal voice. Think of "Tales of Great Ulysses". I saw him at Radio City in the 70's on a Monday night and the experience was profound. My favorite person in Cream and they couldn't have done it without him. A true professional.

Jack is the single most influential bassist for me. Starting with Cream, I tried emulating his style but, of course, it couldn't be copied. My connection to him, as well as many, is purely musical but then again, what more need be said about this great musician? Just as it is with great sadness that the family let the world know of his passing, it is with equal sadness that we read of it. Whenever I hear a constant rumbling above, I will think Jack is preparing another bass solo for us. Thank you for sharing him with us for 71 years.

I felt very close to him, I'm a bass player and I sing in my band, and we are three, so I told my band-mates that was natural for us to play one of the Cream songs beside our own songs. I thought that White Room was the best song for us to play, because I love every bridge, every passage of Bruce, the way he changes every bar and he personalize it. I regret not to have seen him live. We'll miss you Bruce, and I swear: the next White Room played be The Snow Crows will be just for you, no one else. R.I.P. Marco.

It became clear to me that he was no ordinary bassist early on. I was fortunate enough to see him in Lowell, Massachusetts at the old commodore ballroom at age 15. I was totally blown away by the experience. The power they pushed out of their music was mystical and magical. They took some old blues tunes and expanded them to where the songs just lit up. He was my most influential bassist of the era. And that is saying a lot because at the time there were many many great bass players and many many great musicians. Music of this time was the most creative and I am proud that I was a part of it. I think that he went on a journey when playing as Cream. The live stuff was so innovative and seemed to tell a story. Jack and Ginger took Clapton to a place where he was allowed to jam like a god. The three blended so perfectly. He was a gift from God. and now another small part of my makeup has been chipped away with his loss. I am deeply saddened for his family and may God bless. Thank you Jack for personally helping me through troubled times in my life as Im sure you have for many others.

Maybe most of the people still think that he was just "the Cream's bassist" and nothing else. Since I was a kid, while listening to the famous version of "Spoonful", included in the "Wheels of fire" double LP, I tried not to be distracted by Clapton's invasive guitar playing and to concentrate on Jack's multi-faceted way of playing. Since then, I have been sure that he couldn't be pigeonholed in a single genre. He wasn't simply a rock bassist, or a blues bassist. He ultimately changed the way of playing his favourite instrument, long before (for example) Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke etc..., because his greatness let him avoid every cage and let him see (touch?) the connections among the many musical universes. He was a great and gifted songwriter, too. I remember watching a Rockpalast show on TV in the early 80s; he put everything aside and played a delicate set, simply based on his powerful voice and the innovative sound of his electric piano. Unfortunately, it seems that almost everybody has just forgotten that in 2012 Jack recorded a wonderful album on Palmetto, focused on the reworking of some of Tony Williams's compositions, with, say, a little all-stars band, including the likes of three other open-minded musicians, such as John Medeski, Cindy Blackman-Santana and Vernon Reid. I saw him playing live just once, a few years ago, with Gary Husband and Robin Trower: It was just an incredible confirmation of the extremely positive things I always thought about him.

I was most fortunate in seeing Jack perform with Cream in February 1967 at Woodlands Youth Centre in Basildon, Essex. It was a life changing experience for a fifteen year old guitar player who was discovering the blues amongst many other styles of music. After the performance Jack and Eric Clapton signed a piece of paper that our friend Jim, the warden, took round to band's dressing room. Many years later in November 2002 I met Jack after a show at The Cliffs Pavilion in Southend. It was great to talk to him, albeit briefly, about his music, and get his signature once again. He was most appreciative of my comments regarding his album Shadows In The Air, warmly shaking my hand. I have obtained several of his albums over the last few years, which have been very inspirational to me. Finally I was fortunate enough to see him play once again at the Abbeyfest in Bury St Edmunds in 2012. I was able to take some great pictures of him and the band that day. He was a great inspiration to me, and many others too. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. Bob Cross (musician and photographer).

In my view Jack Bruce was the most innovative musician working within popular music. I also think he was the best. THe remarkable collaborations with Pete Brown through Cream and his solo work will continue to inspire. There were somany pinnacles but the greatest I think was Harmony Row-it is all there- the fusion of folk jazz rock church music, the incredible bass playing, the beautiful piano and of course his wonderful voice powerful but also very tender. All off his music has given me many wonderful hours and I am thankful this great musician left us this work. I hope at this sad time the Bruce family can take some comfort from the pleasure he gave to so many and the very high regard peoplehave for him. Adrian Walker

In 1966 I was 17 years old. The music I listened to was folk and blues, mainly at a local blues club (upstairs in The County pub). I first heard Cream then. They were all that the Blues and Rock should be and Jack's heavy base backing could be felt in my bones as I listened. I have heard, if not bought, all of Creams albums. They have kept me going through the years of Punk, New Romantics, Disco etc. When real music was almost non-existant. Jack will be missed by millions and I am one among many. Jack was one in a million. LOL Dave C

It is with great sadness that I heard of Jack's passing. He was a big influence on me and my music, from when I first heard Cream aged about 8 and recorded the Albert Hall gig off the tv onto an old reel to reel tape so I could listen and absorb that amazing sound. Years later I had the privilege of playing keys on a number of gigs with Jack between 1988 and 1994 when I was in The Norman Beaker Band and he was always gracious and encouraging. There was a passion and earthiness in his voice and his playing that touch the soul and swept you along like a tidal wave. My heart and prayers are with you Margrit and your children at this very sad time.

my Obituary has been posted on this website; Best Things On Earth.com Jack The Bruce To make a statement like 'he was the greatest bass rock bass player on earth' must have some validity. He was; and I have been saying it and writing about the fact for nearly 50 years. So just in case anybody is not aware of who Jack Bruce is, listen to the Graham Bond Organisation, listen to Cream and listen to his solo work (especially the superb album Songs For A Tailor). He died today and I am very very sad. He lived a few hundred yards from where I live, and I never bothered to have that cup of tea with him that I promised to have. Jack could be a difficult cove; argumentative and a man of principal, and I had one or two run ins with him that stopped short of lawyers. His on off on off relationship with Ginger Baker is a legendary tale. I would always side with Jack, even though he could be stubborn. He wrote some of the greatest rock classics with Pete Brown; including 'White Room', 'Politician', 'Theme From An Imaginary Western' and 'I Feel Free'. He had a magnificent voice and this puts him in the 'greatest singer on earth' category as well. His bass playing was so good it was ridiculous, (listen to what he does on the live 'Crossroads' from the Cream Wheels Of Fire album). Just listen to that bass! And take a quick listen to his song 'The Weird Of Hermiston', with Pete's wonderful lyric that Jack sang so well. I'm going to a funeral I'm going to a funeral dressed in white I'm going to a nightclub I'm going to a nightclub sleep with night And I'm not going with you

Jack has always been the primary influence for my bass playing. Through studying his catalogue, I discovered bass to be a true instrument in its own right, and not the "instrument of failed guitarists" as was bandied about in my early days. Without Jack's influence, I would not have remained as loyal to four strings as I have been. A true musical hero that will be sorely missed.

My condolences to Jack's family, without Jack classic rock music would not sound as is does today. He was a pioneer in the creation of rock music, his massive talent and the jazz , and classical influences mixed with the blues, Jack helped create a genre that has enveloped the world of music. I say the great man a few times his tour with Robin Trower being the last time, and he never disappointed me or any of the audiences that I was in at his gigs. Jack's voice and bass playing laid down a template for many others to follow and learn from , his influence and music will live forever , have a wee rest Jack, you deserve it man!!!!!!!!!!!

I was a teenager when I first listen to the intro riff of Badge. The surprise of this music so strange and different from the one I listened to before change my life. I'm a professional musician and think that the music of Jack Bruce (Cream, his solo album Song of a tailor above all) signifies a lot for me. I have the chance to see his concert in Castiglione del Lago at Trsimeno Blues in 2010 and regret to haven't the possibility to shake his hand. But a person whose music accompanies your life from the youth through my actual middle age is a sort of family member. For these reason I will miss Jack Bruce and his musical genius.

Jack Bruce was the best blues rock bassist on this planet. His live performances with Cream and with his other bands should serve to teach others what true improvisation is. Jack played from his heart and soul and set his audiences on fire with excitement, something lacking in much of todays hum drum music. Salute Jack...you will be missed. Barry DiGregorio

Saw Jack Bruce play in various guises, from The Graham Bond Organisation, through Cream, and his solo work. You never ignored the bass when Jack was playing it! He could jam and improvise with anyone, in any style, on a number of instruments, but also write and arrange, which most musicians of his era could not. A truly accomplished all-round musician, whose music will live on and continue to influence future generations. RIP Jack - gone, but not to be forgotten.

Jack was one of my very few favorites. Another nail in the coffin. "The Music has Died." I'm currently 64 and finally thinking of disposing of my albums and turntable. I flat wore out two copies of Cream's Disraeli Gears and my First Cream is getting pretty worn also. I did get to see Jack with Ginger ten years ago in Houston. It was great. Jack had taken Gingers suit coat and was wearing it onstage. I'm sure Ginger didn't know where it was. Then Ginger came on stage and saw Jack wearing his suit coat hanging down to about his knees. They just smiled at each other. It was pretty special. I'm glad I was in my seat early enough to see it. Really funny...Bob

Farewell the Bruce RIP. One of the pioneers of rock music as an improvisational art. He showed that rock music was the equal of jazz, with the same emotional, intellectual and sexual profundity that music could muster. To those musicians growing up in the West of Scotland in the late 60s and early 70s Jack Bruce was one of ours. Someone whose musical integrity we aspired to. Someone whose life we felt we could touch in the way his influence touched ours. I remember standing outside a cottage named Rosedale in the suburban village of Langbank near the mouth of the River Clyde at two o'clock on a Saturday morning in the summer of 1974. As a guitar-playing friend of mine tried to convince me that this was the very place that had inspired Jack to write the song, Crossroads. No argument could convince him that the song in question had actually been written by the King of the Delta Blues Singers, Robert Johnson, many decades before. He was convinced that as a boy Jack had regularly cycled out from Govan to Langbank for cello lessons, and this had been the inspiration for the song.My friend was sure that someone who had reached such artistic heights was still just a fingertip away. Jack Bruce took the lowly workman-like rock and blues bass guitar and turned it into a musical force. Not subservient to the glamorous solo instruments like the guitar, keyboards, sax or trumpet, but equal to them, with all the spontaneous melodic and rhythmic creativity available in its strings-and more. You saw and heard Bruce play live and you wanted to equal or better him- the guitar was forgotten, the bass was the place. His voice, like his bass-playing, was both plaintive and forceful-often at the same time. Living with the blues, but not born there. Although strongly steeped in the traditions of Afro-American culture there was always something distinctly Celtic about Jack's singing that called to the hearts and minds of everyone. The Bruce is dead, long live the Bruce!

As one of the obituaries has pointed out, he made the bass something that was never lost in the mix, displaying a total commitment in whatever musical situation he found himself. As a musical collaborator, he had few peers, being always in service to the sound. Those of us who saw him live were privileged indeed. His family are rightly proud of what he created. We who listened will never forget.

Its March 1967. As a 20 year old I had just been called up to fight the Yanks war in Vietnam, even though I was too young to vote. Between the first & second medicals, a mate played Fresh Cream to me. The album was hard to find in Oz, and may have been bootleg. Fresh Cream and songs like " I'm So Glad" were a breath of fresh air from wall-to-wall Beatles. The thought of fighting in Vietnam stressed me out. To salve my paranoia, there was lots of beer, served with Fresh Cream over some very loud speakers, and that melodic base of Jack Bruce, playing with God. I did not know Jack was also the lead vocalist til years later. Anyway I failed the second medical, and life moved on. Vale Jack, played strong, done good

Those of you who know me, and particularly those of you who have known me a long time, also know that one musical hero loomed large in my life and appreciation of music. That man was Jack Bruce. This has been the case for decades now and nobody was ever going to shift him off that pedestal. And last Saturday we lost this greatest of British musicians. For those who only knew his work with Cream I can only say that was certainly a glorious peak - but it was also just the brilliant tip of a huge iceberg of music of absolute original and unique genius. My God, I don't think anybody ever came close to matching his overarching and all-round abilities. Where do you start? A renowned and powerful lead singer; a brilliant composer (often with his main writing partners Pete Brown and Kip Hanrahan); probably the most important bassist in rock history (having rewritten the rules even before Cream); a classically trained cellist; a more than capable acoustic guitarist; a spotlight-grabbing harmonica player; and of course a brilliant pianist. In fact, he was even known to have been a quite good drummer too! It is the end of an era. For more than half a century this man: John Symon Asher Bruce; a fiery and passionate Scot from near Glasgow; amazed us with his musical output both in the studio and on stage. He was a total bloody one-off and is irreplaceable. I feel the loss almost as much as if he was family. I saw him so many times in concert and was pleased to have met him a handful of times; when he was always courteous with his time. It was Jack himself who told me about Kip's music and there was another great genre that was opened up to me. A huge gap in our musical landscape has appeared. He will never be forgotten and can never be replaced. 71 was far too young. At 25 he was the leader of the greatest band in rock history and then he went on to so much more. And I think I shall remember him always with these simple lyrics of his: "driving in my car, smoking my cigar, the only time I'm happy's when I play my guitar" ... and the only time we were happy was when he did this too. My deep sympathy and condolences go out to his family and friends and fellow fans. But especially to Margrit, Kyla, Natascha & Corin, Maya, and to Janet & Malcolm.

My biggest revelation in listening to music was in 1969. I was listening to Cream on headphones and decided to turn the balance all the way to bass. Suddenly Clapton(GOD)was gone and I realized there was another God underneath. Wow so that's what the bass is and why we have it. Thanks Jack

What a loss. Jack had such a special talent. The first time I had heard Jack was with Cream. Everyone speaks of his great bass playing but there was a lot more to Jack then just that. His voice was just as powerful as his bass playing. I had heard the 3 Cream musicians play Cream songs in many other bands but it never would be the same as when these 3 guys got together. Jack we will miss you.

I was very lucky to start to play the bass just at the time when there was such an inspiring example as Jack to learn from. It seemed totally natural that the bass should be as upfront as the guitar or vocal, in situations which allowed for it, and for the bass player to be allowed to make the music as exciting and interesting as any other musician. I could name a few recordings where Jack's influence came through in my playing (though I don't put my ability or musicality anywhere near his), the most well-known of which being Fool For Your Loving by Whitesnake, where I specifically redid the bass part to have more attitude, because I had heard how he'd played not long before that on Cozy Powell's Over The Top album. I had the good fortune to see Jack with Cream at the Savile Theatre in 1967 and at their farewell Albert Hall show and many times with solo bands, West, Bruce & Laing, the SAS Band, BBM etc, and I was able to spend a little time with him on a couple of Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camps. I was even privileged to play bass, with Jack on piano, during rehearsals for a show for Fender's 50th Anniversary, though sadly the song was dropped from the actual show. His songwriting was adventurous and sophisticated and his vocals both soulful and powerful. His influence and recordings will live on long after his passing. One of his less well-known songs is one of my all-time favourites: Something To Live For from the How's Tricks album. Thanks for the wonderful music, Jack.

Where would we be without you? I'm a drummer who plays stringed instruments occasionally, but if drummers are supposed to be the timekeepers, bass players are the ones who look after us. Jack, you made it possible for the bass to become a voice-- especially the electric bass. You were the anchor for Cream, and an innovator to boot. You will always be so.

It was yesterday evening while sitting in the audience of a Scott Henderson , Jeff Berlin , Gerry Novak Gig in Germany. At some point during the Gig Scott Henderson ask if there are any requests for some special songs and someone shouted " How about a little tribute to Jack Bruce..? " Jeff Berlin walked to the mic and said " sure,..that is a fine idea. Jack was one of my heros...." WAS one of his heroes..? I asked myself..what..? Then he continued.." for thoose of you who do not know, Jack passed away the other day and..... " I was baffled, I was shocked. I did not know. Then Jeff Berlin played a beautiful solo version of Sunshine Of Your Love. Jack Bruce is gone. Jack, the alltime hero of my older brother who admired him, who loved him, who saw him live so often. He got me in contact with Jacks music when I was still a teenager and his music got me instantly. I was hooked. I always hoped that I would get the opportunity to see Jack playing live some day. Since yesterday evening I know that this is not going to happen in this life. Me and my buddies had great moments in our lives and your music Jack, made thoose moments even better very often. Many parties, many evenings on the river shore and your songs where filling the air via a little old boombox cassette player with a tape of yours playing. Your music was, is and will allways be special to me and many of my buddies. I hope you are doing well wherever you are now. Thank you Jack, for your great music and the great times I had while listening to it. Your fan, Stephan My warmest condolences to the family of Jack Bruce.

Everyone knows what a brilliant and influential musician Jack was, but when I worked with Jack as Tour Manager of Cream, and later as TM of Jack Bruce & Friends, Lifetime and West, Bruce & Laing it was his generosity as an employer and his loyalty as a friend that I will remember him for. He was, without doubt, one of the most genuine people I have ever met and it was a privilege to have known him. We shared life-threatening experiences on two occasions. Once, on a Continental Airlines flight from Denver to Boston (on a WBL tour) which got caught up in in a hurricane over Colorado, suffering many injured passengers, and then getting caught up in a force 10 storm when crossing the Irish sea in a small boat which Jack owned for travelling from Campbeltown to Sanda, his island which was located off the west coast of Scotland, which he so dearly loved. Fortunately we were able to walk away unharmed from both incidents. One word sums up Jack Bruce to me: Irreplaceable. RIP my friend.

Tragic news, indeed. Sad to think that there will be no more new music. Silver Rails was great, as was Cream, WBL and his earlier solo stuff. My condolences to his family - the world is now a darker place. R I P, Jack

No one will take his place nor in my memory, nor in the music. Bruce was the One and The Lonely Bass Player. But not only, he was a Musician, a Composer, a Poet, a Singer. His music will always be ethereal beauty; awfully now addressed only to Heaven.

I saw Jack six or so times from the 70s to 2012. I listened to his music countless times since I was a boy at school discovering Harmony Row and marvelling at the originality and strange beauty of composition and playing. My favourite singer and bass player. Inspired musician - gave me so much joy, from Cream, Songs For A Taylor, through to More Jack.. and Silver Rails. Condolences to his family, and his great, wonderful, unique music is out there for us all.

In my opinion Jack had the greatest rock voice of them all. I am terribly sad to hear of his death. I am exactly 10 years younger than Jack - aged 61 - and was also born in Glasgow. I have been a fan of Cream and Jack above all since childhood For me he was always the star of Cream. Apart from that voice, he was a peerless bass guitarist and possessed true star quality. Though he said little on stage a great warmth and humanity always seemed to emanate from him. I am very sad myself, and send my condolences to his family. What a man! Love to you Jack wherever you have moved on to. Ronald

It was 1978 in Madrid, where I grew up. I was 16 and I was with friends listening to our favourite music as we would many an evening back then (which Johnny Winter, John Mayall, progrock, etc. etc etc.) Then came these 2 bluesy songs which never seemed to end. (I later inquired and learned they were "Spoonful" and "Rollin' & tumblin'" from "Cream live") My friends were raving about the guitar solos but for me it was the singer - THAT guy was something else. I checked and found out he was not only singing, but doing that unbelievable bass line - AND the harmonica. I've been and will remain a fan since then. My deepest condolences to his family.

Jack, a major influence on my music since first hearing Sunshine in my early teens on AM radio in Australia. I still own the vinyl of Wheels of Fire that I bought in Carnaby St in 1968. I treasure my vinyl of Songs for a Tailor and Harmony Row. I see you every time I lift my 60s EB3 to play, I'd like to think I hear a bit of you when I play it, but who can ever truly replicate that awesome innovative playing. Sadly the wagon leaves the city ... we'll miss you Jack, thanks for the inspiration, so much great music, so many memories.

My best wishes to Jack's family and friends. Undoubtedly he has influenced generations of bass players, but you should know that I took up a bass two years ago at the age of 50, and have derived hours of enjoyment simply by letting the rays of Jack's sunshine roll over me. Thanks Jack!

Both as a bass player and a singer he was on of the greatest musicians in Rock, Blues and Jazz Music. I was lucky to see him on stage several times from the early 70s to his fantastic performance at the 37th Deutsches Jazzfestival Frankfurt in 2006. Now he's climbing up the Rope Ladder To The Moon

I've been reading a lot of superlative posts about Jack Bruce since the sad news dropped. He was brilliant and gifted and wrote fabulous material in a time when it seemed everyone was writing amazing stuff. Great performer. It was a shame that the music world glossed over his work after Cream. He was an original overshadowed by Clapton's more derivative work. RIP, sir.

My heartfelt condolences to Margrit and the family. No tribute can be big enough for Jack. No words can describe the influence his work has had on me and countless others. He was not only a musician, singer and songwriter of the highest order but a composer with the imagination, talent and versatility to express himself throughout a 50 year career. He was the Bach of the modern era. Jack's legacy will never be matched. He is a true legend of the like we will never see again. We have lost one of the true greats. Sleep well.
